"Number of Pages" Code

Jul 7, 2005 4:54AM PDT

In a Word 2000 document, we've set up codes in the header to print "(Page number) of (Number of Pages)".

In the document, and in Print Preview, it shows up as Page 1 of 4 on the first page, Page 2 of 4 on the second, etc., just as it should.

But when it prints, the hard copy says Page 1 of 1, Page 2 of 2, Page 3 of 3, etc.

So WTH is going on here anyway?

Anybody have any suggestions?

Thanks in advance,
Mark

There was a bug in some Word version.

It was supposed to be fixed with a patch. But your post omitted what version and what SP the Word is at.

Version is 9.0.2720. It's got the latest service pack upgrades, but this is for one of our manager's computers, so I don't know what our IT dept has installed for sure, but I do know they keep us up to date.

Looks dated.

Checking the SETUP.EXE of Office 2000 SR-1 finds version 9.0.3821. Try yours.

In closing, why isn't this a problem for your IT staff? Fire them and get new staffers if they don't perform?

Ha!

Ha! I'll tell him you said that, Bob!

IT "staff" here is basically one over-worked manager, who has other duties besides IT, and who is currently on vacation, which is why it's in my lap today.

I suppose it would be nice if we could all work in that Shangri-La land of big corporations with a fully-funded geek department at our beck and call ... or then again, maybe not.

Instead, we're just a bunch of people working for a living, office support for a factory where the computers are an afterthought.

I'm pretty sure we're typical ... Anyway, I've worked in a company with a dedicated IT department (early 90's). We could never get hold of them, and when we could they were still useless.

Besides, I like our situation: If they ever thought about firing me, they have second thoughts since they need me for backup tech support! Ha!

Anyway, thanks again for your help ... It's good to know that there are places where we ad-hoc tech support people can turn to for answers!

Hope to hear what version you find.

But it does look dated. I was wondering about your IT staff since your comment seemed to indicate they had it under control. My post was to tickle you to tell a longer IT story, which worked.

The 2 areas that I always find this bug in is an outdated Word 2000 or printer driver. Why the printer driver I'll never know but it's another common cause.

The final area is that NORMAT.DOT bug that's been around for about 10 years. Try the usual and rename the normal.dot to normal.old and try again.
