You can place light blocking tape over the numlock light if that bothers you. Its not a failure.

The shutdown issue varies with the OS. You could have a Macintosh, PC or other computer since this forum doesn't distinguish what you could have. Share with the forum such details in the future. In the meantime, the following two links are about shutdown issues with the common Windows OS's.

Num Lock irritates me too. Seem to recall there was a Dos Edlin....

in my long lost pre-windows days, whereby you could turn it off at start-up.

If so, can you remind how to get into Dos before windows starts up and actual command line to be edited.

Please make this Newbie-proof, or if not possible, I'll go out and buy some tape!

Many thanks
Regards, Mo

You can go into the bios at startup and turn numlock off. Or you can simply press the numlock after startup and turn the light off.(At least this works on my system and since you did not supply info on your system it may be different)

There is a config.sys and a Notepad.

The config.sys (a file in the root folder) can contain the line
NUMLOCK=OFF
You can edit config.sys with Notepad. If it doesn't exist, make one with only this line (end it with enter).

For other ways, see http://www.annoyances.org/exec/show/article01-001
(an appropiate name for a site for this 'problem', I think).

For us here in continental Europe, numlock is important. We use alt+1+3+8 for

No success so far...

Config sys didn't take, though I'm not sure Win ME uses this file.

Annoyances.org doesn't seem to cater for ME in this respect either.

Tried finding it via Regedit and Win.ini etc but without success.

Guess it's there somewhere.

Incidentally, I have a cordless keyboard without a numlock light or screen indicator, so it's not quite as frivolous a search as one might think.

Will keep trying though.

Windows ME rarely uses config.sys. Did you try...

Hi,

I can't take it any more! Write your own "fix" for the numberlock "problem"

COPY the following to a text editor (notepad is nice) then run it through DEBUG to create a file named nonumlok.com that you can simply place in your Startup Folder. Copy ALL the bolded text!

N NONUMLOK.COM
A 100
MOV AX,40
MOV DS,AX
AND BYTE PTR [17].DF
INT 20

RCX
C
W
Q

After copying it to notepad, save it as NONUMLOK.SCR then run it through DEBUG by opening a command prompt and typing DEBUG < NONUMLOK.SCR which will create the executable you want to turn off your numberlock.

Success now - have finally found it in my Award Bios. For info if of any interest ...

the other things I tried:

Generating a command file didn't work for me, as even though it ran at start-up, it had no effect; similarly with a slightly different one I found on Google.

Using regedit to create a new key with stringvalue etc had no effect.

Still, happy now, so many thanks again.

Mo
