Resolved Question

Num Lock in Win 8 is Not on @ Startup

Jan 7, 2014 3:42AM PST

Just got Win 8.1 on my new computer but I noticed that the "num Lock" does not come on after start up. Can anyone know help me to correct this? I went to Microsoft's community board and their suggestion does not include Win 8 and no one has answered the question, yet.

If u can help it would be appreciated.

Thanks

I think this is true.

It's only set after we log in. The on/off on boot would be a BIOS thing. But it's rare to find that today as BIOS writers removed it as it would be superfluous, redundant as any OS could change it in a split second.

I'll test that in a few.

Did a restart and num lock was still on the next time.

All good here.

My computer is an HP Envy 2TB desktop and I bought to replace my Compaq 2003 XP which I know many things have changed and improved but this is nuts. Maybe I need to contact HP?

Thanks for the response.

Just for clarity.

If this is not the OS the machine came with, HP has an out. Also, I didn't find a good enough manual on the product so I can't see what's in the BIOS.

And finally, HP may have updates to drivers for 8.1. You may wonder why I advise to not update till your machine's maker tells you they are ready.

I would never touch a brand new computer's Bios unless advised by the manufacturer, it is still under warranty; however I will just have to accept that this is a "normal" function of HP computers. This is my first HP desktop and I have worked on a few but technology is forever changing but some things should just stay the same. (My other Desktop is Compaq with I loved but I can no longer upgrade it and it is not worth purchasing another "upgrade" motherboard and etc).

I did good with my Compaq XP that has given me great joy since 2003 and will use it for other things.

Thanks for responding, u r the best.

the number lock was set to ON by default on my motherboard. I can't say anything about your HP. I would be guessing.
