From what I read, you'll need your XP CD or the restore CD to fix this. Or some try moving it to another machine! http://forums1.itrc.hp.com/service/forums/questionanswer.do?threadId=517272

Hope they supply it for you. If you had a retail CD and lost it, here's how to get a new one -> How do I obtain a replacement CD?
A.

To obtain replacement CD-ROMs or manuals, contact the Microsoft Replacement and Supplemental Parts Department at (800) 360-7561.

Did you happen to "move" XP?

http://support.microsoft.com/?id=314057 is noteworthy along with your note about another OS. It's possible you may have tried to move the XP OS.

Sadly, you see a XP CD is needed to finalize this repair with FIXBOOT.

What If I borrowed the installation CD from a friend and repaired it from his CD, will that work?

Yeah OK but all I need is the recovery console that looks like the command promt.

I know that the WinXP install disks have this but will downloading the 6 boot disk from Microsoft have this function?

Help, my PC with Windows 10 won't shut down properly

Since upgrading to Windows 10 my computer won't shut down properly. I use the menu button shutdown and the screen goes blank, but the system does not fully shut down. The only way to get it to shut down is to hold the physical power button down till it shuts down. Any suggestions?
