What's missing in your post:
1. What problem you have.
2. How steam is related to your problem.

The thing is, that most dv6 models are unsuited for gaming.

The older i7 tells me it may have seen better days. That is, if it used to work it's old enough to need cleaning and the old heatsink compound replaced.

i agree it really is quite a sad laptop for what i paid for it however this problem has only come up recently and has worked before even on REALLY old games like a 1999 game or even 1998 so i cant see performance as the problem

I never wrote it was performance

But at its age, the usual care is often required. You will find clients that won't do or have the usual work done.

Answer
run system file check
Oct 2, 2014 3:59AM PDT

and replace it.
In a command box enter;
sfc /scannow

If you are using a Limited account, then try running the games affected using an Administrator account, see if the same thing happens.

This might explain some of it when running 32 bit programs on 64 bit systems.
