(NT) Norton is a resource hog

after several hours of using my computer that is very fast 3.2 ghz 1 gb ram, norton antivirus and internet security 2005 takes up all of my sytem resources and maxes me out at 100% sometimes it uses like 98% of my resources... im running xp. Any ideas?

I have started using an alternative anti virus program that does not satisfy my av needs fully but is better than nothing. It doesn't do this at all. I believ that the problem is with norton or one of its settings.

It's probably the settings. Sometimes they keep scanning all fixed drives one after another following some weird schedule that you didn't set. Also, you may want to turn on access scan off.
