....which means it may not be too long before the Cardinals have to convene again. I'd have thought they'd pick someone younger, unless this is one way to ensure that this pope isn't in office for (roughly) 26 years like the last one.

the next time, Josh. If anything, Benedict's appointed cardinals will be even farther to the right than JP2's.
And if you believe the prophecies of St. Malachi, the next pope will be Peter the Roman, who will preside over the end of the world..

stems from things like:
"Having a clear faith, based on the creed of the church, is often labeled today as a fundamentalism," he said, speaking in Italian. "Whereas relativism, which is letting oneself be tossed and 'swept along by every wind of teaching,' looks like the only attitude acceptable to today's standards.
Very Politically Incorrect from the left's point of view. Josh and Dave are already looking forward to his death.
age and length of his term is the 2nd or 3rd item of item of interest regardless of who is taking part in the discussion. This is an important topic and worthy of consideration.
Anticipating the length of a life is in no way similar to looking forward to a death.
You owe Josh and Dave an apology.
Dan
alter the church's current theology and direction.
I didn't know you wanted the RC church to change theology or direction. How come you told that to KP and not the rest of us?
Dan
...most of their "theology and direction" is of little concern to me. I was merely making an observation that the new pope is only five years younger than the one who just died. I'm not looking forward to his death or any of the other nonsense you're claiming.
This is just more of your pigeonholing IMO.
He was in High School, where ALL students were signed up, so it was not his choice. He was drafted into the army, where he served in aircraft warning. Most, if not all, of the men of that time still living were Hitler Youth.
His choice of names was interesting, considering that Benedict XV was a liberal.
Let's give him a chance.

or an ex-Nazi. Jeez!
I knew a guy who was in Hitler Youth. He hated the Nazis. You didn't have much of a choice in those days, expecially if you were a kid.
be one? After all, he sounds a lot like George Bush from the very brief comment I read. Pardon me for repeating it again.

No wonder they're in a snit!![]()
Bush would never make that statement. He thinks "relativism" is something involving Jeb.![]()
You're more SDS than he's Nazi.
He at least was joined against his will!

Let's give the guy the benefit of the doubt.
He is almost definately not a NAZI now.
Dan
Based on what? Have you looked into his soul to devine his motivations? I didn't think so.
Dan
elevation to leadership in the RC by those who know him best, in the absence of other evidence, is sufficient proof.
there have been more than a few, for lack of a better word, rapscallions who have been so elevated. Achieving the post is not an absolute guarantee of the Pope's outlook or philosophy.
In any case, the probability that he's a Nazi is really pretty close to zero.
Dan
there's no forgiveness and redemption in your world? That's not the world of Jesus.
Not too surprising though. If you don't hesitate to render judgement on the apostles, I guess condemning the Pope is no big deal. Quite surprising coming from a self proclaimed Catholic.
Where does he say he thinks Ratzinger is still a Nazi?
Dan
is an atttitude of judgement and disapproval, if it is not meant to suggest that he still holds, or is sympathetic to, those views? The only possible conclusion is that he's saying the man still holds a Nazi viewpoint.
Dave said "I think Ratzinger is still a Nazi".
You have set that as the standard for interpretation of your own statements. You should be consistent and interpret other's statements the way you wish your own interpreted.
Oh, that's right, you guys think 'grotesquely twisted interpretation' is the same as 'fact', don't you.
Dan
You always come back to the same starting point while ignoring everything said in the interim.
You took me to task for saying that you think liberals are bigger consumers of porn because you didn't use those exact words. DK did not specifically state that he thinks the new pope is still a Nazi, so how are you drawing that conclusion?
KP said that Dems are very interested in the SUBJECT of pornography, not that they were big consumers of it. Re-read.

a little consistency. You said that Dave thinks Ratzinger is still a Nazi. You've tried to twist his words, but you have yet to point to Dave's "I think he's a Nazi". I stand on that point. Not circling in any way.
But that's OK. You don't have to be consistent. Rules you apply to your own statements you do not have to apply to other's.
