The new pope is 79 years old......
Apr 19, 2005 2:57AM PDT

....which means it may not be too long before the Cardinals have to convene again. I'd have thought they'd pick someone younger, unless this is one way to ensure that this pope isn't in office for (roughly) 26 years like the last one.

But if they can elect an ex-Nazi, it won't be different
Apr 19, 2005 3:34AM PDT

the next time, Josh. If anything, Benedict's appointed cardinals will be even farther to the right than JP2's.
And if you believe the prophecies of St. Malachi, the next pope will be Peter the Roman, who will preside over the end of the world..

Ex-Nazi -- well yes and no
Apr 19, 2005 4:01AM PDT
http://www.cnn.com/2005/WORLD/europe/04/19/ratzinger.profile.ap/index.html

In his memoirs, Ratzinger wrote that he was enrolled in the Nazi youth movement against his will when he was 14 in 1941, when membership was compulsory. He said he was soon let out because of his studies for the priesthood.

Two years later he was drafted into a Nazi anti-aircraft unit as a helper, a common taks for teenage boys too young to be soldiers. A year later he was released, only to be sent to the Austrian-Hungarian border to construct tank barriers.

He deserted the Germany army in May 1945 and returned to Traunstein -- a risky move, since deserters were shot on the spot if caught, or publicly hanged as examples to others.

When he arrived home, U.S. soldiers took him prisoner and held him in a POW camp for several weeks. Upon his release, he re-entered the seminary.

It doesn't sound like he was ever a subscriber to Nazi thinking.

It also doesn't sound like women should start lining up to enter the priesthood during his tenure as pope.

age and length of his term is the 2nd or 3rd item of item of interest regardless of who is taking part in the discussion. This is an important topic and worthy of consideration.

Anticipating the length of a life is in no way similar to looking forward to a death.

You owe Josh and Dave an apology.

I didn't know you wanted the RC church to change theology or direction. How come you told that to KP and not the rest of us?

I'm not Catholic and frankly....
Apr 19, 2005 5:12AM PDT

...most of their "theology and direction" is of little concern to me. I was merely making an observation that the new pope is only five years younger than the one who just died. I'm not looking forward to his death or any of the other nonsense you're claiming.

This is just more of your pigeonholing IMO.

Do you think DK cares?

The truth doesn't matter to him, only his point of view counts.

Let's be fair
Apr 19, 2005 4:14AM PDT

He was in High School, where ALL students were signed up, so it was not his choice. He was drafted into the army, where he served in aircraft warning. Most, if not all, of the men of that time still living were Hitler Youth.

His choice of names was interesting, considering that Benedict XV was a liberal.

Let's give him a chance.

or an ex-Nazi. Jeez!

I knew a guy who was in Hitler Youth. He hated the Nazis. You didn't have much of a choice in those days, expecially if you were a kid.

Apr 19, 2005 5:15AM PDT

there have been more than a few, for lack of a better word, rapscallions who have been so elevated. Achieving the post is not an absolute guarantee of the Pope's outlook or philosophy.

In any case, the probability that he's a Nazi is really pretty close to zero.

there's no forgiveness and redemption in your world? That's not the world of Jesus.

Not too surprising though. If you don't hesitate to render judgement on the apostles, I guess condemning the Pope is no big deal. Quite surprising coming from a self proclaimed Catholic.

Apr 19, 2005 5:06AM PDT

Dave said "I think Ratzinger is still a Nazi".

You have set that as the standard for interpretation of your own statements. You should be consistent and interpret other's statements the way you wish your own interpreted.

Oh, that's right, you guys think 'grotesquely twisted interpretation' is the same as 'fact', don't you.

a little consistency. You said that Dave thinks Ratzinger is still a Nazi. You've tried to twist his words, but you have yet to point to Dave's "I think he's a Nazi". I stand on that point. Not circling in any way.

But that's OK. You don't have to be consistent. Rules you apply to your own statements you do not have to apply to other's.
