Someone once said to keep your friends close and your enemies even closer. They will buy each others products to test and they will call each others help desks posing as customers as well. It makes good business sense to do such. You get better by learning where a competitor is stronger than you are. Maligning them in front of potential customers only goes so far. Invented perceptions fade away. Good companies that are in for "the long haul" and not just out to grab some short term cash will invest heavily in knowing their competitions strengths. This is not the same as espionage. It's good practice and improves products.
