The file will be undamaged if you rename it, so go for it. The only catch is that any shortcuts you had to the file (including those in the recent documents lists) will not know what to point to. The next time you use one of the shortcuts, it will notify you that the file couldn't be found, and ask you if you want it to automatically search for the target, or if you want to browse for it yourself. Once it has acquired the target, the shortcut will be fixed and not need repaired again unless you rename the file again. However, since few people rely on shortcuts to a specific file, this shouldn't be a major factor.
