NP780Z5E-S01UB laptop will not update to 8.1

Oct 18, 2013 6:40AM PDT

I attempted to update Windows 8.0 / install 8.1 on a Samsung NP780Z5E-S01UB laptop to 8.1
All attempts result in the following issues:
Installation / upgrade appear to complete, however
A black background is all that is visible until I move the touchpad
The mouse cursor appears, and quickly disappears after the touchpad motion ends.
I have tried the following methods
Upgrading from 8.0 Home to 8.1 Home via App store
Upgrading from 8.0 Pro to 8.1 Pro via App store
Install a fresh 8.1 via PXE over the network

Samsung is of no help, they say, check back regularly for an "update"

Has anyone heard of this issue?
Restoring / Reverting back to 8.0 (any version) works normally

Yes.

And just like we did in prior Windows we want for drivers and Microsoft to catch up.

You bring up a good point today. Owners have moved to "now" when they want stuff. They don't want to hear it will take time.

Unfortunately all of my update paths to 8.1 are currently blocked on this particular model of laptop.

I am not dealing with the normal "one or two drivers" not working (I can certainly wait for those fixes).
In this case after I install the 8.1 update, I am not able to even log in-as the login screen is un-usable after an update (or clean install) of 8.1

That Sucks

it's hard enough to upgrade an OS from MS without Samsung adding to their issues into the mix.

Also, this is a fairly new I7 laptop (Purchased May 17 2013). This is not a "clunker" where I would expect to get drivers on a slower basis.

This is a newer model, it appears that it was never put through many QA tests prior to the 8.1 release.

As it now stands, Samsung is essentially blaming Microsoft, and Microsoft will not give any response unless you pay for a support issue report.

But it is a laptop with many Samsung added apps.
