Novice. Neophyte to the world of laptops. Need/Want one

by jesskalinowsky / April 11, 2008 10:55 PM PDT

Need/Want one under/about $1000.
Is that realistic?
Brands: HP, DELL, or ACER?
I need wifi, [email junkie!] AT&T
any suggestions what configuration, speed, RAM, GB etc. I should get?
not interested in games, hi def graphics, just basic speed for 'business computing'. I want to lounge in a Java Kaffe instead of sitting at a desk to do my work! ANY feedback and direction and help would be appreciated. Are the computers on SHOPNBC and the other TV shopping channels new or outdated equipment for quick clearance. Missed a great deal on a HP package deal for $999. went up for $1300. the next day! BUMMER! strike while the iron is hot to do something immediately while you have a good chance of achieving success. You may not get a better offer - I'd strike while the iron's hot, if I were you.

Walmart and buy a $400 laptop. If it dies and by chance can't be fixed, buy another one for $400. Your luck can't be that bad, and you will still save money over the $1000 system that you won't need.

IBM junkie here. . .
by Coryphaeus / April 12, 2008 5:47 AM PDT

I've bought four from here:

http://www-132.ibm.com/webapp/wcs/stores/servlet/CategoryDisplay?storeId=1&catalogId=-840&langId=-1&categoryId=2576396

Have had exactly zero problems. You can get a kick butt refurbished model for well under a grand.
