Question

Noticed a FPS drop in most of my games.

May 7, 2018 11:44AM PDT

Hi guys  Happy

Basically, I've recently noticed a drop in FPS in pretty much all of my games in the last few weeks. I have done a few searches, but I though it would be best to ask on a forum.

It could have been happening before, but it was after I installed and played an ARMA 3 trial a couple of weeks ago, that I really started to see that something wasn't right. I didn't adjust any visual settings, but it played awfully on default, probably running at less than 15FPS.

Before this, everything I played was great, I don't really display the FPS counter on all my games, but when I did, I was getting well over 60FPS (on highest settings) with no significant drops. For example, CS:GO, PUBG, Fortnite and even Deus Ex: Human Revolution. They were silky smooth before, and when I tested it out a few days ago, it seemed so be quite "jittery", no where near as smooth. And 'Rainbow Six: Siege', (a bit of a strange one), the game itself plays okay, but in the menus, it slows down when I mouse-over the operators.

Specs:
CPU: Intel Core i7-6700k CPU
MOBO: ASUS ROG Maximus VIII Hero
GPU: Nvidia GeForce 1070 8GB Strix
Memory: 16GB (2x8GB) GSkill Ripjaw V
PSU: Corsair RM750x
Cooler: Cooler Master 212 EVO

If anyone could help or advise, I would appreciate it so-so-sooo much. If any more info is needed, I will happily provide.

Sorry to ramble on, it just worries me a little. Sad

The most common cause I run into today

Are on machines that have driver updating enabled on Windows. Microsoft is not the best at selecting drivers. Especially when you have it all working.

There have been a few folk that tried to use the i7's graphics too.

So you're saying...

...I should disable this, and update drivers manually from the manufacturers? Will this make a difference do you think? Thanks for the reply! Happy

I can't predict the results.

Only share a too common reason I'm running into far too often.

After this work I usually have to make a sweep of the drivers to put them to where I had them or where the owner was before the issue.

If that doesn't clear it up we look to other areas with a Web Speccy report.

Here's a second common finding. Bum HDDs. Not failed, just very high values in the 01 and 07 areas of Smart Values (you can see such in your Web Speccy report.) This can confuse folk new at this. They can't connect this with low performance at first.

I have not re-installed any drivers yet, but...

Sorry but my advice
May 9, 2018 9:19AM PDT

Is to disable Windows 10 driver update system and then install the drivers you did before. Newer drivers are not always the best. My advice and others as well is to only update the driver when you have a good reason.

I'll be back with a Speccy reading in a moment.

Hmmm

The Memory on the OP doesn't match up with the one in the Speccy which show Here  that it is not supported by the MFG .

Wondering about this Confused

Me too.

The Speccy report with its "unknown" has me advise updating that old BIOS.

1. I find that these updates add more memory support.
2. The BIOS update notes do include performance improvement.

Why the memory is important is that this is where all the action is. If it's not optimal, you see effects all over the machine.

A Speccy reading.

1. Power Profile
Try to get those numbers up or don't let it sleep for now. Some drivers just don't play well after sleep.
After you solve the issue, you can set these back to what you want.

2. BIOS looks very out of date.
https://www.asus.com/us/Motherboards/MAXIMUS-VIII-HERO/HelpDesk_BIOS/ notes performance gains and the memory in the speccy is noted as unknown. These BIOS updates can improve memory support and performance.

3. The CPU Vcore looks low. I usually see this at 1.xV.
That could be a BIOS update item.
http://www.tomshardware.com/answers/id-3002802/stock-voltage-6700k-cpu.html notes the stock voltage. Try CPU-Z to see what voltage it reports.

4. I can't see any indication of changes to USB POLLING RATE. Sometimes I do encounter this, mostly on gamer rigs. If you did change this, put it back to stock.

5. Many connections to the Internet at the end. Try turning this off:
https://www.howtogeek.com/224981/how-to-stop-windows-10-from-uploading-updates-to-other-pcs-over-the-internet/

Nothing stands out in the Web Speccy report. There are items I would adjust or update above but to me this sounds like drivers to me at the end of the day.

Thank you, Prof!

I'm going to start by updating the BIOS (as soon as I get my hands on a USB stick) and then go from there, updating the drivers and what-not. I'll keep you posted on this thread in the coming days!

Whatever the outcome, I really appreciate your input! Happy

FIXED!

Updated the BIOS, and did a clean install of Nvidias drivers. Everything runs like a dream again! Thanks bud! Love

Thanks for the report.

If you could does Speccy now report the RAM properly?

As to the Nvidia driver clean install, I don't often write how but my method has been to use DDU (see google) and then install my driver of choice.

New Speccy looks fine. But...

1. What is up with the Intel and it's connections?

I wonder. Can you check your HANDLES? Read my post/question about this at:
https://www.daniweb.com/hardware-and-software/microsoft-windows/threads/516015/how-many-handles-did-you-find-i-found-over-906-000-on-some-app-more

There's also some PSA about it at https://www.reddit.com/r/pcgaming/comments/3ryt7j/psa_if_you_have_windows_10_and_a_killer_network/

Yes you have that Intel but something is off about that app in the report.

2. The following is something I'd look into on my own PC. It's to do with the RAM and it's reported speed. Does your motherboard support that XMP profile? If so, try to turn it on.

Glad it's back up to speed. Just noting the other odd spots now.
