Notepad opens automatically in WinXP

by boliaaa / May 15, 2010 3:39 PM PDT

The problem is that every 90sec a blank notepad window opens automatically. I've checked and it is always every 1 min 30 sec.
Currently there are 10 notepads open while I'm writing this.

I'm running WinXP SP3 on an Asus A6 laptop.
This issue has never happened before and started happening yesterday, apparently for no reason.
Last updates were downloaded ~3days ago, not sure what - it restarted the laptop as after critical updates. I haven't installed anything else.

I'm running AVG antivirus and Zone Alarm, none of them found anything.
Nothing connected with notepad is set on startup, neither in msconfig. No suspicious processes running in task manager (just the usual windows stuff).

I've read that Win7 does this sometimes. Any help with XP? Thanks.

malware scan

I just tried scanning with Malwarebytes - it found two suspicious objects and got rid of them both.
Will post back in case the issue comes back.
