Question

notebooks and pads etc

May 22, 2016 3:00AM PDT

I do not own a cell phone however I want to buy a notebook type unit. I will use it with my home wifi and with free wifi when on a trip. I will use it for access to internet for purchasing or finding hotels and maps, or reading novels etc. Do I have to buy a $600 plus model or would a $150 one cover me - I am not a 'wonk' and I don't want to over buy.

For what you want any Android phone or tablet, any Chromebook or any Windows laptop will do. For reading novels an e-reader is recommended much more than any of those.

That sounds like a ChromeBook to me.

It's not a full fledged PC but a step back. However for 99 to 199 bucks you can get a 5 to 7 inch smart phone and on WiFi do most of what you do with a browser. You don't need to get cellular service. Here's a picture I took with my 6 in BLU that was 99 bucks on sale (Amazon) but you can see what it goes for today.

Maybe you can use a smart phone as a tablet here for cheap.

Cheap pad

There are many pads out there that certainly are on the cheap side. They all need some wi-fi connection to get the WWW. You can take from there on just what else you need like reader function or anything other than basic pad. Of course, some apps may get you what you need or desire beyond the simple stuff. Just be sure of the RAM installed and/or possible additional ram via the microSD slot. Also, cheap is cheap but decent models are out there. All too often they are almost like mobiles(phones) w/o the phone part, just a pad. Look at it this way, buy a low-cost but decent pad and if it doesn't work or really suit your needs, you can opt for the netbook or similar and then have the pad as a back-up for access.
