Notebook Users, want to help?

Nov 13, 2005 9:50PM PST

Hi, I'm a business student at UWM, and taking a marketing class. Our group is working on a project to create a new notebook pc. I have a short 15 question survey, and if you own a notebook or plan to purchase one and could complete this it would be greatly appreciated! If not, that's okay, I just thank you for taking the time to read my post!

Do you currently own or plan to own a notebook pc?

Where did/do you find information about notebooks you are interested in purchasing?

Which of those sources was/is most important in impacting your purchase decision about the notebook?

What features are important to you in a notebook computer?

Which features are less important?

What are some factors that will influence your purchase decision? (income, expected price, expected product benefits, etc.)

As a student what do you most use or would you use a notebook pc for?

If you currently own a notebook, were you satisfied or dissatisfied with your purchase? What features made you feel this way?

What features you would like to see added to your current notebook or to notebooks currently on the market?

What price would you consider affordable for a notebook?

Would you be more likely to buy a notebook if it came with free accessories? (Flash Drive, Printer, Web Cam, Digital Camera, MP3 Player, etc.)

Which accessories do you think would be most useful if added to your notebook purchase?

How important is a warranty in your purchase decision?

How long should a warranty on a notebook be?

What customer service features are important to you?

Do you currently own or plan to own a notebook pc?
Yes, currently own.

Where did/do you find information about notebooks you are interested in purchasing?
On-line. At manufacturer sites, user forums, notebook forums, on-line magazines, technical sites and newsletters.

Which of those sources was/is most important in impacting your purchase decision about the notebook?
Can't say one was most important, they all played a role. Likely least important was forums with myopic ober-loyal fanboys ******* their own brands and trashing others...

What features are important to you in a notebook computer?
GPU capacity, battery life, portability, stability, tech support, good display, good media capability, quick play functions, low weight, good track pad, price (or rather value)

Which features are less important?
Generally those features that add lots to the price and weight of a notebook while adding marginally to its performance.

What are some factors that will influence your purchase decision? (income, expected price, expected product benefits, etc.)
See ''what's important'' question. Also what the professional computer press thinks of a machine. Scientifically conducted user surveys. Properly constructed product reviews.

As a student what do you most use or would you use a notebook pc for?
I'm not a student, but I am a tutor, working with veterans to provide them with beginning level computer skills. As such I use my lappy to build lesson plans and test them prior to delivery. I write reports and case notes, do on-line research to respond to product needs of individual veterans.

If you currently own a notebook, were you satisfied or dissatisfied with your purchase? What features made you feel this way?
I'm completely satisfied with my purchase. The key word would be value. For $1200 I purchased a machine meets all my business needs and is a very good multi-media and gaming system. So far Tech Support has been accessible and competent. Again, the key word is value.

What features you would like to see added to your current notebook or to notebooks currently on the market?
Dual core processors.

What price would you consider affordable for a notebook?
Well, ''affordable'' is a concept I can't relate to, I think you ask the wrong question here. I can ''afford'' to pay much more than I would choose to pay. Up to $1600 is what I'd be willing to pay.

Would you be more likely to buy a notebook if it came with free accessories? (Flash Drive, Printer, Web Cam, Digital Camera, MP3 Player, etc.)
No.

Which accessories do you think would be most useful if added to your notebook purchase?
Free shipping, USB flash drive, spare battery, wireless mouse possibly carrying case.

How important is a warranty in your purchase decision?
Important... not in terms of length of warranty, but in the service during the one year standard period (I think one year should be the minimum standard/ no extra cost, warranty period).

How long should a warranty on a notebook be?
See above.

What customer service features are important to you?
Tech support that you can reach in a reasonable time, competent people with an interest in customer service and satisfaction, follow up in the form of a e-mail that specifies the problem addressed and its resolution. A reasonable no-fault return period.

1.Do you currently own or plan to own a notebook pc?

YES.

2. Where did/do you find information about notebooks you are interested in purchasing?

I HAVE CONTACTS IN THE INDUSTRY.

3. Which of those sources was/is most important in impacting your purchase decision about the notebook?

COMPANY LONGEVITY, SPARE PARTS IN YEARS 2 AND ON.

4. What features are important to you in a notebook computer?

THAT IT RUN MY SOFTWARE (I WRITE SOFTWARE)
Beyond that, nice screen CDRW to make a CD to leave behind.

5. Which features are less important?

MARKETING ADS, BROCHURES. The drival.

6. What are some factors that will influence your purchase decision? (income, expected price, expected product benefits, etc.)

The next Macintosh with Intel CPUs. In theory I can run our development software on Windows 2000, XP (we don't care), start looking at MacOSX for porting and Linux.

Winner.

7. As a student what do you most use or would you use a notebook pc for?

Papers.

8. If you currently own a notebook, were you satisfied or dissatisfied with your purchase? What features made you feel this way?

I'm ok with the models I have. The office supplies me with a few so the only one I have an issue with is I can't figure out how to turn on bluetooth. But not an issue, just maybe a glitch in our order.

9. What features you would like to see added to your current notebook or to notebooks currently on the market?

None.

10. What price would you consider affordable for a notebook?

1 to 15 thousand, depending on if it's an office machine or the one that goes in the tank.

11. Would you be more likely to buy a notebook if it came with free accessories? (Flash Drive, Printer, Web Cam, Digital Camera, MP3 Player, etc.)

No.

12. Which accessories do you think would be most useful if added to your notebook purchase?

Backup optical tape drive.

13. How important is a warranty in your purchase decision?

No warranty = no purchase. Also we look at epinions to see if the company does not honor the warranty.

14. How long should a warranty on a notebook be?

-> Now there is a good question. The problem here is that to extend the warranty the price must go up. As the price goes up, sales go down. If sales go down, then you don't reach a critical mass of selling enough of said model.

This is not a matter of what I want but what the market is willing to pay.

After many years, the balance was found at 1 year with options for 2 more years.

15. What customer service features are important to you?

Almost none. I don't call in for software support. I just need a working machine and parts if they fail. Customer service is not very important to me. However I've been at this since before the use of CP/M.

Hope this helps you.

Bob
