Notebook running Vista won't hold dual monitor settings

Jan 12, 2011 10:19AM PST

On this Dell notebook I leave the dual monitor settings, as: Extended Desktop /w notebook as primary (yes I click Apply and OK). Then frequently, though not always, upon rebooting or resuming windows, the setting have changed to Single display with the monitor as primary.
Does anyone know what's up with that?

My bet.

Is a driver bug. Did you go to dell.com, enter your service tag and see if dell has updated any drivers for your machine?

This does not mean they fixed it. Bugs like that are fixed only when enough people report them (and even then not a reason for them to fix it.)

Notebook running Vista won't hold dual monitor settings

Thanks, your bet sounds right. Unfortunately Dell says "No downloads are available for the product, operating system, and language combination you have selected". This laptop in its day was Dell's introductory bargain product. And as such it has been trouble free, most complaints I've had have been about Vista, not the computer.
I'll go looking for drivers.
Thank you

or the imbedded graphics chip but if it is one of the ATI graphics controllers this link might solve your problem as it allows you to update with ATI Catalyst drivers.
