Since my old p3-600MHz laptop does fine at video editing in the field and some picture editing, the issue may be that I'd like a better screen and add in a color calibrator since no laptop I've seen has such.

Here's one -> http://www.pantone.com/products/products.asp?idArea=2&bShowProducts=1

It's amazing that manay professionals don't have this color calibrator. Armed with this device, just about any laptop will do.

Don't know much about specifics of what you're looking for, but I think most video/graphics users would recommend Apple for its graphics capability. You are usually paying for a little more for its sleek designs, but I think the price is worth it. Graphic designer friends of mine mostly work w/ editing using apples.
As far as specifics on apple notebooks, I think for your needs a Powerbook 15 or 17" would be best. price range from 2500-3000 I think.
