Be specific. What Spyware and antivirus are you using?

The reason I ask is that I find that using just one tool doesn't find them all.

The OS in use should have been noted.

Running Windows XP Pro
Spyware Program: Ad-aware 6
Antivirus Prog: Norton Anti-Virus 2004

Sorry...the notebook doesn't automatically restart...it just automatically shuts down without notice...

Take a look in the event viewer for clues. If you are on battery power, my old laptop does similar. In my case, a new battery will fix that.

There's also a key combo that I must avoid to keep it out of sleep/shutdown.

In closing, what anti-parasite tools do you use?

I had a problem like Bob mentioned where using the <Shift> key and the : or ; key (While typing normal e-mails and capitalizing works) would immediately shut down the notebook (and you would lose any unsaved data).

This was a software issue resolved by a bios revision posted for free for my Compaq X1000 series by HP/Compaq. I have not had this issue since I downloaded the revised system bios.

So, you should look at the E-machines available bios and driver updates on their website and/or contact their customer support.
