Question

not sure about buying an iPad mini

Jan 9, 2014 6:28PM PST

Hello,

I am a college student. I own a Dell INSPIRON Core i7 that I really love and have been using for about 2 years. I use my lap top a lot, and by that I mean...I sometimes keep it on for 4 days in a row, until the poor thing has to shut itself down. It is my everything, I have my school books on it, my projects, etc. (I am a computer Science major) My only problem with this computer is that I can't drag it to school with me, class to class, then back home. It's really heavy and I just don't feel comfortable using the lap top in school.

I have saved up money for a MacBook Air (2013) because of amazing Haswell, and as a result, the outstanding battery life. It's very light, and it's very beautiful lap top. Here's where my real question begins...

I plan on taking graphics Design classes (A lot of PhotoShop, 3D max, etc ) and I am planning on doing some video editing for a short film I'm making. This concerns me...Will the MBA hold up? I can get a Macbook Pro Retina, but I would rather get the air for the better battery life and portability, and then add an iPad mini.

I want the iPad mini for when I'm going out. I don't have an iPhone, but I have an iPod touch 5th G...I thought having an iPad would be very useful, specially when I don't want my laptop with me. Also, it would be a gift to the family- I would be the owner, but everyone else can use it as well. (My mom loves reading books, and she reads them on her computer, sitting behind a desk, and it's sad to see her like that for hours being uncomfortable. )

So- Which one would you get, if you were in my shoes:

1- Mac book air + ipad mini
2- Mac book air
3- Mac book pro

(*I really need the lap top. I'm just not sure about adding the iPad to the mix )

Thank you in advance, and sorry if it was too long.

IMHO

I suggest just the Mac Book Air. The iPad is too difficult for serious work. The Air is very compact and light weight.

Agreed

And I see a lot of subtle Apple redundancy in that mix.

If the OP reference to "go out" means, for entertainment purposes, I'd opt for an iPad mini w/LTE. Sell the iPod Touch at that point to get more utility when/where you need it.

I'm not selling my iPod touch, because my music is my life and I use it up to 10 hours a day for music. I have about 40 something GB of music on it, and I'm am choosing what songs I want on it. So, this device stays. I have a nano but that's just for running (limited 16 GB), but iPod touch is just my life basically.

Uhm, I will get the Air one way or another. I don't really like Pro. I've worked with it, and it just feels like every other notebook out there. I just am not sure about getting an iPad in addition, it just seems like a waste of money. Money I can save up for future, or just spend on clothes. lol

So why are you here again exactly?
