General discussion

Not getting my email.

Sep 15, 2006 9:36PM PDT

I have 4 networked computers working through a SMC router on dial-up running Windows XP Home sp2 and Windows 98 SE. I had to replace the MB and processor on one of the desktops running on XP. As you can tell, IE is working OK but I can't seem to get Outlook to work. All the settings look to be the same as the other computers but when I ask to read mail it comes back with "No New Messages". The Outlook Express welcome message is the only thing I have received so far. I can go in from one of the other computers and get my messages, so I know there are messages. When I watch its progress, it shows connecting and authorizing and gives no error messages, so it looks like the mail setting are correct, just doesn't seem to find any messages. Where have I taken a wrong turn?

I discovered that I can forward from one of the other computers. . .but any other time it tells me there are no new messages. Why?

1. MS Outlook or Outlook Express? Those are different products and your post isn't clear about it.

2. If one of your other computers receives a message it's deleted from the mailbox with the email-provider. So you won't be able to receive it again. Unless, of course, you set the account properties to "leave mail on server". Then you'll get it once on every PC until the mailbox with the ISP is so full that it overflows and refuses to accept any incoming message until you empty it.

The best way to SEE if there's anything in the accounts mailbox at the ISP is using a webmail interface to that account.

It's not advisable, in my opinion, to have ONE account set up to be received at MORE THAN ONE computer.

It is Outlook Express

I am sorry. I don't use Microsoft Office and I forget that there is a Microsoft Outlook and Microsoft Outlook Express. I tipically don't access my email from more than one computer. However, I had a lightning strike that took out my tower computer, so while I was rebuilding it I had to get my email from one of my other computers, that I don't usually even get on the net with because I keep all my financial and personal info on that one. Now that I have rebuilt the tower, I want to get back to using it for my "internet machine." I use an SMC router for my firewall and System Suite 6 for virus protection and Lavasoft's Ad-Aware for regular spam cleanup. But, as I said, I have not been able to get my email off the tower. It tells me I have no new messages, then I go to the other machine and pull off maybe 32 new messages, every day. As I said, I can forward a message into the email on the tower and get it but I can't pull the email off my ISP. I don't know why that should be different.
