The CNET Lounge forum

General discussion

Not being encouraged by Cnet!

I finally decided to switch to linux. I did. I felt that I had a moral oblibation to give it a try, and if I liked it, then I wouldn't have to pay every time microsoft comes out with something. So I did all the partitioning, I installed Ubuntu, I got all the updates, and the BOL lounge won't render quite right in firefox. I think CNET hatest linux. :). So now, of course, as the BOL lounge is an essencial piece of my day, I've got to switch back.

UGH!!! AND, the flash app that plays the podcast on the show page crashes firefox

I made the switch.

I made the switch as well, hopefully you'll stay with Linux! I use Opera to render the web page, it looks decent in there. I use Mozilla Suite to play the pages with flash video and then I use Firefox for regular browsing, its rather annoying, but I put up with it because of my utter frustrations with Microsoft. (I digress)

(NT) (NT) what distro are you using?

Fedora Core 4

In reply to: (NT) what distro are you using?

I tried using 5, but it was still too new. A lot of applications like VMware Server, Gizmo Project and Opera, just to name a few, would not run correctly on it. I REALLY did like it though, it was really fast.

If I didn't have a friend to help me out, I would have probably installed Ubuntu. But since I have someone helping me out, I am enjoying Fedora.

yeah, I'm using Ubuntu

as I don't have a friend to help with linux. It's really, really easy to use, and not amazingly fast, but certainly faster than windows

Unofficial Ubuntu Guide

In reply to: yeah, I'm using Ubuntu

You have probably heard of these, but just in case you haven't, I wanted to point you to them. The first one is the Unofficial Ubuntu Guide, Ubuntu has not gotten around to updating their guide for 5.10.

This second link is really awesome, they make it easy to install extra software onto your system. I never got the codecs to properly install though. The only complaint that I have is that they do not include Gizmo Project.

Cool..

In reply to: Unofficial Ubuntu Guide

I have Ubuntu dual booting on an old PC I have but it doesn't like the onboard graphics chip on the Ubuntu side. I saw the first guide, but never looked into it and hadn't really messed with it in a while. This is giving an incentive now.

Another Great Resource

In reply to: Cool..

I subscribe to the Ubuntu Group on Google and I am constantly getting emails from everyone who is also subscribed and submitting content. When I was having a problem with Ubuntu that was the first place I would usually look.

I'm also on the Fedora & SuSe mailing lists, each group has thousands of messages, so you're bound to find some help in previously discussed topics.

Linux doesn't recognize a LOT of drivers I use.
