Not able to download antivirus software

Nov 8, 2008 10:32PM PST

I don't know how I got it, but I know I have malware including a trojan but I can't open any of the software to help me get rid of it. I am able to download it (specifically Ad-Aware 200Cool but when I try to open it I get an error that says "...is not a valid Win32 application". I'm worried that I'm caught in a loop of a virus infecting something that won't let me open antivirus software. HELP!

Also - is this the best software I should be using? Thanks.

I have a Windows XP 2002.

You do NOT have an Anti Virus program on your computer or did you mean a Anti Malware program?

Are you able to download Malwarebytes Anti Malware?

Please download Malwarebytes Anti-Malware or alternate download link

* Make sure you are connected to the Internet.
* Double-click on Download_mbam-setup.exe to install the application.
* When the installation begins, follow the prompts and do not make any changes to default settings.
* When installation has finished, make sure you leave both of these checked:
* - Update Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware
* - Launch Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware
* Then click Finish.
* MBAM will automatically start and you will be asked to update the program before performing a scan. If an update is found, the program will automatically update itself. Press the OK button to close that box and continue.
* If you encounter any problems while downloading the updates, manually download them from here and just double-click on mbam-rules.exe to install.

* On the Scanner tab:
* - Make sure the "Perform Quick Acan" option is selected.
* - Then click on the Scan button.
* The next screen will ask you to select the drives to scan. Leave all the drives selected and click on the Start Scan button.
* The scan will begin and "Scan in progress" will show at the top. It may take some time to complete so please be patient.
* When the scan is finished, a message box will say "The scan completed successfully. Click 'Show Results' to display all objects found".
* Click OK to close the message box and continue with the removal process.
* Back at the main Scanner screen, click on the Show Results button to see a list of any malware that was found.
* Make sure that everything is checked, and click Remove Selected.
* When removal is completed, a log report will open in Notepad and you may be prompted to restart your computer. (see Note below)
* The log is automatically saved and can be viewed by clicking the Logs tab in MBAM.

* -- Note: If MBAM encounters a file that is difficult to remove, you will be presented with 1 of 2 prompts. Click OK to either and let MBAM proceed with the disinfection process. If asked to restart the computer, please do so immediately. Failure to reboot will prevent MBAM from removing all the malware.

And To Download Malwarebytes On a Friend's Computer...
Nov 9, 2008 5:12AM PST

..which is sometimes necessary to clean out the junk, see the instructions below:

On a friend or family member's computer, download the Malwarebytes installer and update files from the links below, copy them to a CD or flash drive, then transfer the files to the problem machine and use them.. I use the sites below to download the installer file and the manual updater:

Once downloaded, rename the program installer "mbam-setup.exe" file to something else like "Gogetum.exe", then copy the installer file and the update file to a CD or flash drive.. Transfer the file to the problem machine, then install the "Gogetum.exe" file, then run the update to get the program current.. After that, run a full system scan and delete anything it finds.

Malwarebytes Installer Download Link (Clicking on the links below will immediately start the download dialogue window.)

Malwarebytes Manual Updater link
http://www.malwarebytes.org/mbam/database/mbam-rules.exe

Hope this helps.

could anti-malware miss my threats?
Nov 9, 2008 11:10AM PST

Thank you. I was finally able to download Anti-Malware but after running both the quick and the full scans, it tells me that no malicious items were detected. However, yesterday I ran the Kaspersky Scanner and it found 5 'threats' which all look malicious.
Is there another anti-malware program I could use or a way to tell Malwarebytes to look in specific folders?

Suggest you set Malwarebytes to do a 'full scan'.

This will result in everything in the PC being scanned.
