Norton problems...Windows XP IE 6.0/broadband

I could not send email via outlook express today...had no problems yesterday. I checked in Norton to see if anything going on..when I clicked on Statistics...I get stuck...can not end task..can not turn off computer...I had to manually turn off the tower...what is going on??? I checked my spyware scans..nothing showing up. What am I missing? Why wont the outlook express send email?
