Norton or ZoneAlarm?

Apr 19, 2005 5:56PM PDT

I'm using ZoneAlarm Pro instead of Norton Internet Security because it's faster, but is ZoneAlarm Ani-virus better than Norton Ani-virus? Can it detect as much viruses as Norton?
Thanks

I don't think so.

I don't believe that ZA Pro's anti-virus works the same way as other anti-virus applications. It monitors whether your existing AV is uptodate or not.

ZA's help file says this;

Antivirus Monitoring is available in ZoneAlarm, ZoneAlarm with Antivirus, ZoneAlarm Pro, and ZoneAlarm Security Suite.

Antivirus Monitoring is a secondary defense system that racks antivirus software you have installed on your computer and lets you know when that antivirus software is out-of-date or turned off. This secondary alerting system works as a back-up to your antivirus software's built-in warning and update system. Note that not all antivirus products are supported by this feature.

Most antivirus products include automatic updating, and alert you when your virus definition files become outdated.

So, in short, you need other anti-virus protection. If you do not want to go the whole hog and pay for Norton's, you could try AVG 7 Free version from http://www.grisoft.com

Good luck,

Mark

Yes, It has

Anivirus is included in ZoneAlarm Security & ZoneAlarm with Antivirus. Only ZoneAlarm & ZoneAlarm Pro have Antivirus monitor. I know this coz I'm using it. But what I'm trying to say is that is Norton AntiVirus detect the most anivirus, and no other can beat?

My error

You're right. I hadn't realised that ZA had gone into the AV market.

I haven't seen any benchmark testing of ZA against any of the other more well know brands so I can't say. Perhaps others will be able to help you. You may want to post a similar question in the Virus & Security Alerts forum, link on the left. They would probably have more information.

Good luck

Can it detect all the virus?
Apr 20, 2005 9:06AM PDT

What's I'm trying to say is that can ZoneAlarm detect as much viruses as Norton Anivirus?

- Collapse -
It depends.
Apr 25, 2005 3:36AM PDT

On the definition file that you are using. If the virus def file is up to date, then it will detect almost all viruses in your PC [if any]. But remember that no A/V is perfect. They may detect them, yes; but there is no guarantee in removing them. Not all viruses are easy to remove, some even require special cleaners. It just really depends. Plus, as an example; if there are only 17 viruses invented, and you have them all in your PC, ZA's antivirus could detect virus1-16, and Norton could detect virus1-13, and 15-17. But there is no guarantee in removing them. I might've gotte a little too out-of-topic, but nevermind.

Norton or ZoneAlarm
Apr 23, 2005 12:12AM PDT

It's been a long time since I used Norton. I used to have Norton and BitDefender. Now I have BitDefender and ZoneLabs Security Suite.

BitDefender once found a virus that Norton missed. After exaustive invstigation, I discovered that Norton called it by a different name, and it had missed it!

This is strictly subjective, but I think ZoneLab Security Suite is great! It simply never misses, and eliminates the problem with no fuss.

I think both Norton and McAfee are error prone and I won't use either.

The best freeware combo
Apr 25, 2005 11:44AM PDT

In my opinion, the best freeware combo you can get is ZoneAlarm (Not Pro, just as a firewall) and using Kaspersky Anti-Virus. Both are completely free and excellent ways to protect your computer!

Free?

Kaspersky is free? I thought you have to pay for it.

I wish Kaspersky was free!!!

Kaspersky is 40 dollars for the personal edition and 70 dollars for the personal pro.

You remind me of the Aerosmith song "Dream ON"

If only it was free...

Forget about Norton or Mcafee , they are worthless !
Oct 11, 2005 7:00AM PDT

Hi all ,

IMHO Norton and Mcafee suck big time , I used them once and they sucked big time.

That's why I use Panda Platinum Internet Security 2005 today.

The firewall that is built in that one , is not that good , so I downloaded and installed ZoneAlarm again today. The Panda Firewall was a simple one , but it kept on giving errors or didn't load properly.

To answer your question : Norton and Mcafee suck big time , they are worthless to buy. ZoneAlarm is a good one, I use the free version.

But maybe that might change in the future , who knows.

Just stay away from Norton or Mcafee , that's the only good advice I can give you.

Why not NAV or MacAfee?
Oct 11, 2005 9:20AM PDT

You have a strong negative opinion about the subject AV software but don't say why. What problems did you have with them?

I'm interested as I've run NAV on my last 3 systems (over 6 years) and never had any significant problems with viruses.

Spyware and adware are more of a problem but those require alternative solutions.

Explanation of negativeness against Norton or Mcafee
Oct 11, 2005 9:55PM PDT

Hi all ,

Well, I have used Norton and Mcafee also and they are known to be ''system resources eaters''.

Also do those two leave alone some viruses and let them through , breaching your computer's security.

I use Panda these days , it's way better than Norton and Mcafee together , trust me.

I use Panda Platinum Internet Security 2005 now , before that I used Panda Antivirus Titanium 2004 and before that just Panda Antivirus Titanium , lol.

The only thing about Panda is , if it doesn't work well , it's better to re-install it.

The firewall of Panda sometimes doesn't load , that's why I have ZoneAlarm ( the free version ) installed now. I deactivated Panda Firewall , because it wasn't working well.

The rest of the product works well , though.

It's just that I don't like Norton or Mcafee anymore , nothing more , nothing less.

I can't understand why people still buy that crapware and trust it.

Just some good advice to you all.

Greetings ,

NOD 32, KAV, or Antivir
Oct 13, 2005 9:53AM PDT

NOD 32 has performed the best of any virusscanner ever in the virus bulletin test. It also has excellent heuristics that can catch new viruses well in advance of updates. In addition, it has extremely quick scan times and it has the smallest memory footprint of any anti virus I know of.

However, KAV is also an excellent choice. It has the best detection ( see http://www.av-comparatives.org) of all the antivirusses, except its heuristics is behind NOD by 30 % (so is every other antivirus ) The only problem with kaspersky is it does take up a bigger memory footprint, though not as bad as norton.

Antivir is a free antivirus that has the best detection of the free antiviruses and doesn't have a very large footprint. However, it doesn't have e-mail scanning so you will have to scan your e-mails manually.

These are the three av's I can reccomend for serving me faithfully for the past 5 years without 1 virus or computer problem.

Nod32 Rules over them all!
Oct 15, 2005 6:53PM PDT

As a tech that has worked on many computer one thing I found well lol Norton and Mcafee is junk. Even I had tried both and yes I caught viruses and trojans, Needless to say my Norton 2005 went into the garbage. Never been happier then with nod32, 100% detection rating and the fastest in scanning. Ok I'll even say this even avast free home edition stop a trojan that norton couldn't do, so yes I would recommend avast over them. About Zone alarms can't say much about it never tested it ah though did fix one computer that had that. So people out there try nod32 and maybe you'll find viruse and trojans that those other programs had missed.

Zone Alarm Pro is not the equal to Norton Interent Security
Oct 16, 2005 11:04AM PDT

Zone Alarm Pro is only a firewall and Norton Internet Security is a Full Service suite of Security related applications which include both Norton Anti-Virus and Norton Firewall plus much much more.I attempted to utilize NIS-PRO-2004 on my Dell Dimension 4300 Desk Top however when I changed my ISP-moving from Earthlink/DSL to Verizon/DSL-with MSN premium NIS was not able to properly monitor MSN incoming and outgoing mail while all the while being able to monitor incoming and outgoing mail at my verizon web site.It was the equal or at least it had all the rudiments of an incompatable relation, and indeed it did not take me long to uninstall NIS.For the record I think Norton Anti-Virus is excellent. However I did not take to long a time going first to the freeware ZoneAlarm Firewall to ZoneAlarm Pro to ZoneAlarm Internet Security Suite.I found out first hand that ZoneAlarm anti-virus is first rate and if maybe you might guess it has discovered to date 6 separate files all coming in by MSN-Junk Mail that were infected and were put into quarantine. It has proven to be an out-standing suite and great anti-virus.I get prompted often by both Security at my security center and by ZoneAlarm to keep checking for updates and so on-It is an excellent suite with an excellent anti-virus.

Skip Norton and Zone Alarm
Oct 16, 2005 6:33PM PDT

and get Mcafee Antivirus. One of the best antivirus I have ever used, detected everything on this computer so far and I use that and the Mcafee firewall and I have no complaints whatsoever. Norton failed to detects several trojans on the computer many times.

Something to think about
Oct 17, 2005 3:20AM PDT

lets say you have anti-virus program and its the same one you been using, you run a scan and bingo it finds a trojan or even a virus this where you the something to think about comes it. You should be asking yourself how it got there and why your anti-virus didn't stop from entering the first place. Remember a good anti-virus program shouldn't only just detect, it should also protect your computer from ever getting anything in the first place.

Yes, that's why I recommend Mcafee
Oct 18, 2005 12:54AM PDT

Norton missed several, also I tried Ez Antivirus, and well it detected a trojan, but wouldn't remove it. So well I went back to Mcafee. I had some real problem with their Mcafee Antivirus Home Edition 7 on a Windows 98 computer and well I swore to myself I would never use them again, but I guess I lied.

There program is just that good now, that I have forgiven them for all the problems I had with their older version. Plus it may have been the computer itself or the os.

Mcafee has caught everything on this computer.

Hmmm , I wouldn't recommend Mcafee or Norton to anyone ...
Oct 18, 2005 1:38AM PDT

Hi all ,

Hmmm , I certainly wouldn't recommend anyone to use either Mcafee or Norton.

I hate both of them , that's all.

Don't try to convince me otherwise , I won't ever use Norton or Mcafee myself.
I will stick to PandaSoftware's Panda Platinum Internet Security series from now on.
I used Panda Antivirus Titanium , that was a good product as well.
The built-in firewall in Panda Platinum Internet Security 2005 doesn't work that well , but the rest works very well, so that's why I would recommend it to everyone.

- Collapse -
Well that's where we disagree
Oct 18, 2005 2:32AM PDT

I will never use Panda, I just don't like the company and don't trust them. I had a bad experience with their online scanner a few years ago.

Norton Ghost 9.0 I do use. Norton Antivirus I use to, but don't anymore. I'd take Norton and Mcafee over Panda anyday.

Panda couldn't pay me to use their product.

Yes , I know , opinions are different
Oct 18, 2005 5:36AM PDT

Hi all ,

Yes , I know we don't share the same opinion about that.

We both have our own reasons to that.
Personal experiences are different and opinions are different as well.

That's just normal , lol.
