Norton Internet Security 2009--How to selectively block...

Sep 29, 2008 12:01AM PDT

outbound network traffic? I'm used to using ZoneAlarm's free firewall, which asks me every time a new program tries to access the internet. NIS 2009 is incompatible with ZoneAlarm, so I uninstalled that and am using NIS's firewall. It just seems to allow all programs access to the internet. I can see where I can block access after the first time, but what's the point of that? Please help!

Your worry is misplaced

As a convenience, NIS embodies a list of safe applications and does not ask the user for permission to allow outbound traffic for those applications. That is supposed to be user friendlier than pestering you every time you install some software that connects to the web. I believe that there is a setting you can apply that will force it to seek permission globally, however, so as to disable this capability.

Application Access for Norton Internet Security 2009
Oct 5, 2008 2:42PM PDT

Hi jumpyg,

This is Mike from the Norton Authorized Support Team.

To control how internet enabled applications access the internet when using Norton Internet Security 2009, you need to configure the "Smart Firewall" portion of the application.

1. Open Norton Internet Security 2009 and click on the "Settings" link next to "Internet."

2. Click the "Configure" button next to "Program Control." You can then go through the list and use the pull-down menu next to each application to configure it's internet access. When you are finished making the changes, click the "Apply" button at the bottom of the window and then the "OK" button. These changes will be permanently in effect until you change them.

Thank you,
Mike
