Norton Ghost 9.0: Backup limit not working

Dec 11, 2004 3:58PM PST

Folks,

I've got Norton Ghost 9.0 set up to make base backups weekly and incrementals daily. I have also set the number of incremental backups to be retained at 7. The problem is that NG doesn't stop with the 7 or, more specifically, it doesn't delete prior bases and their associated incrementals, which as I understand it it's supposed to do automatically. The consequence is that I run out of space for the backups.

Any help you can give would be appreciated.

When you find such a software bug, you should call its maker.

Bob,

Well, I figure I'm just doing something wrong. And I did try the Norton site. I've read all the FAQ and Knowledge Base articles and found nothing relevant. Norton doesn't seem to have any forums. Hence my posting here in hopes someone might be able to help. It seems unlikely that Ghost fails in such a fundamental way, so I'm perfectly willing to beieve I've missed something somewhere.

Actually it's not a big surprise.

I found a bug in SystemWorks in 2000. The bug was also present in SystemWorks 2002, 2003, 2004. I have no way or the inclination to see if it is still in the 2005 version.

My bet is you're doing it right, but they didn't test it or test it on your system.

PS> What bug? It's noted at http://www.bugnet.com/alerts/bugalert_010110.html

That's kind of depressing. I've got to say the lack of a support forum over at Norton struck me as pretty user-indifferent. I'll email them, without much hope of a useful reply. Are there alternatives to Ghost?

Ghost does some things rather well.

Such as duplicating a drive. But you seem to have stumbled over something new they may have put in and haven't fully tested.

Think over how you work around this issue with your manual steps. Maybe you can write some more involved batch files to automate it.

This is YOUR SYSTEM of backup so I can't guess what else would do since I only know a tiny portion of what you want to accomplish.
