Norton Disk Doctor problem

I'm using Norton System Works 2004 on Windows XP. When I try to use Norton Disk Doctor, I get a message to the effect that the operating system, or another process, has access to the drive and NDD can't continue with the repair. What does this mean? I unloaded all the other programs and it still doesn't proceed.

Software such as Zone Alarm, Goback and such are installed. "Disable" may not be enough for these. You often find you try SAFE MODE then uninstall whatever is not stock.

I just posted a similar problem but with Scandisk (Norton Disk Doctor 2003) gave same message. Will Disk Doctor run in Safe mode?

I have Norton System Works 2003 and ran into the same problem with Norton Disc Doctor. When you try to run the program from Windows, you get a message to the effect that program can not operate because another program has control of the hard disc. Then you are offered an option to schedule the task at a later time. If you say yes, the next time you boot the windows chkdsk program will run during the boot process and do the disk checking for you, and after complete the boot process will continue to completion. If you try to run chkdsk from a Windows command prompt (type cmd from run, then chkdsk c: /r /f) you will get the same message, that the hard disk is busy or in use, and chkdsk can be set to run during the next boot. Norton seems to be using Windows chkdsk as it's Norton Disc Doctor utility! You might as well just run chkdsk from the command line directly. See Grif's instructions:
