Norton AntiVirus vs. AVG Free Edition

Feb 25, 2004 11:49PM PST

I am running Windows XP Home on a Dell Dimension 4300.

I am currently paying for Norton, but I am curious about the free version of AVG, which seems quite good.

Any opinions?

Frankly, if you are good to go with Norton, use it.

Free AVG is less of a system impact and you can pay up for the full AVG if you like it.

Why I note Free AVG so often is simple. Too many let their AV lapse. An out-of-date AV is too much like NO AV! So we have options. There are others as well.

In closing, I consider it "or" and note "vs."

Craig,

In early January I replaced Norton A/V for reasons that I will not comment on here and am using AVG 6 Free version. I am more than pleased and have no plans to revert back to Norton. It will automatically do daily checks for new reference updates.

It's your choice but I say do it without any hesitation.

Happy Computing!

Glenn,

May I ask what OS and email client you're running with AVG Free Edition?

Yes Craig, my O/S is Windows XP Pro and Outlook Express 6.0 is my mail client. My experience has been good. My settings are to received automatic reference updates. These are received most every day recently.

Good luck! Happy

Any AV is only as good as it's status in terms of current definitions as well as common sense.

that said I have used AVG for the past 4 years and now have AVG 7.0, an upgrade from the free AVG 6.0.

the biggest difference is the e-mail scanner which operates in much the same manner as Norton.

the second biggest difference is the price of US$39.95 for a 2 year licence of AVG 7.0 v. whatever Norton is selling for, these days.

of course the price is still the best for AVG 6.0 free version.

therefore, if you have the capacity to scan your email in- box and delete infected or potentially infected e-mail then the free version is the best.

it will however, allow you to open an infected e-mail but will promptly move it to the virus vault once open.

Thanks for the replies, people. I have to start a new discussion for my next question. My brain already hurts. Grin.
