Norton Antivirus/Internet Security

Sep 5, 2007 3:56AM PDT

I have 4 computers I need coverage for antivirus. Looking on eBay, you have people selling 3 user and 1 user (though the review on Cnet for Internet Security 2007 says the single edition is no longer available, but their specs also show 1 user license???).

Is there really such thing as a one install or are they all 3 installs? If there is a difference, how do you know which one you're getting?

Does anyone know the true story on number of installs allowed with Norton? The software companies limiting the number of installs really puts an end to people cleaning their hard drive and doing reinstalls every 6 months.

There are still 1-user licenses...

Symantec still sells single-user licenses at a lower price. They are identical to their 3-user license counterparts, but are differentiated on the box. The 3-user packs should display a black box in the upper right corner on the front as shown here. Single-user licenses do not have that designation, as illustrated here. Also note that the license limits the number of concurrent installations installed (such as 3 different computers at the same time), not the number of times you can reinstall it should something go wrong. If there is a problem a quick call to Symantec support can clear it up.

Hope this helps,
John

Thanks!

A picture is worth a thousand words! Thanks for the effort of "showing" me the difference. I love buying from Newegg. They're great.

I get confused about the 3 installs because at one time I installed Norton on three of my computers at different times throughout the year and they all had exactly 365 days of coverage no matter when I installed the update. This last time I updated, they all were set to expire with the very first installation - giving me 214 days on the second install and 183 on the third install. Did I maybe have a single user license to cause this?

Just CD and no box

When you get just a CD, how do you tell if it is a single user or a 3 user license? Is there something when you install that tells you?

Unusual, but...

Unless it's being purchased as an OEM or used copy it should come in a box, but regardless it should be labeled on the CD itself as well. As a general rule, unless it states otherwise it's a single-user license. (If I remember correctly the number of users is not stated during installation or in the generic EULA, only on the media and packaging.)
