what WOULD you suggest, since we are ON the client side, and have all those balrogs out there trying to get our money, our ids, and our attention?
By utlizing a combination of software and hardware to take back ownership of your machine. For instance on the software side don't depend on just updated DAT files; write your own programs/ or buy software that works by analyzing the behavior or activity of the programs running on the computer and blocks those that carry out damaging actions and are unknown viruses. By analying the heuristics of the OS services damaging process can be paused, or halted until analyzed further... Panda Software is just one example.
Given the proliferation of flash attacks the old DAT method just does not work.
Yet another method might be to lock down the critical areas of your DMZ net computer with a service that takes a snapshot image of the OS and important files. Then if the machine is attacked, simply reboot and the machine is restored to orginial operating specs. Faronics is just one such example with their product Deep Freeze.
Or even better use both Panda and Faraonics! Best design your own( I understand not everyone can do this today, but you will be able to with time and study).
Lastly a well maintained hardware firewall with port management is a good stay against intruders. Again lots to choose from or build your own. Many commerical firewalls use linux, but you could build one out of an old pentium running Unix, Be or any other flavor out there. The point is we can all bash or extoll the product of the day, but until we ourselves step up to the plate, the most common/popular products will always be attacked and thereby provide security exploits.
Never trust any system completely even your own. The one thing the thugs can not anticipate is human intervetion. We are the best security measures out there. And when in doubt always fall back to the laws of security.
not everyone has the capability, the skills, or the time to "write/build our own programs"; your suggestions are valid, but impractical for most people who just want to check email, surf a bit, and maybe play a few games.
Obviously, having a series of interacting spyware and virus programs is a start, as is paying attention to what's out there.
Not everyone is as knowledgeable as they might be, and sometimes I think having a piece of equipment this powerful and complex is a bit like handing the keys of the ferrari to a beginning driver...
The hard drive is backed up once a month and the drive where my work files are is backed up more often than that. That, and the programs I have for spyware and viruses have kept me out of trouble and clean for nearly a year. Beyond that I simply do not have the desire or the brain for learning how to build software programs. *g*
I've been using Trend Micro for years now after it was factory installed on a Sony laptop or was it my Sony desktop? Anyway, it was when you got to use it with updates for a year. After one year you could pay for the upgrade (which I have). Last year Trend Micro gave me my upgrade offer with the option of being able to load it on three computers for an additional $10 or something like that. This program does not slowdown my computer it is very easy to use and updates daily. I'm very satisfied with PC-Cillin, it less expensive than Norton or McAfee who I believe think they own your computer and can screw it up on a daily bases. Check it out at TrendMicro.com.

It is listed as EZ Antivirus 2006 and is better, according to the reviews, than both Norton and McAfee. I was steered to it from microsoft.com and had gotten a free year and I am now in my 3rd year with it.
In 1999, I had McAfee and 6 months later, a virus that destroyed my motherboard. I went to Norton Systemworks next but was sent a faulty CD in 2004. They refused to replace it and sent the money back to a closed bank account, short changed me for I also had just the antivirus that was lost and went to Computer Associates AZAntivirus since then. I am running Windows XP Home Edition SP2 also. I also have AOL that would provide me with free McAfee but I like my antivirus from computer associates and I would recommend it. If you check Microsoft Partners, it is listed as CA. Darrell
i prefer macfee viurs scan 2006
but i have one problem with it when i want to scan for one partation it scan for all computer not the partaion(drive) i want to scan
thank u

I have two computers. On one I run McAfee and on the other I run Norton. With these two virus programs I think it is a toss up as to which is better.
If you are running Norton suite 2006 or McAfee suite 2006, I think that Norton is easier to install, setup and run.
What I find with McAfee suites spamkiller it is hard to setup so the accepted mail goes to the inbox and the spam goes to the SpamKiller box.
The firewall on both the Norton and McAfee are about the same.
If I were starting from scratch looking AntiVirus programs, I would not limit my choice to just the two best advertised programs. There are a lot of other good programs which will do a good job for you. You might find that they cost less also.
In these both AnitVirus i.e. Norton & McAfee I wont prefer these two Anti Vruse I would like to prefer r want to use Quick Heal Anti Virus which is very fast and it is very protective
norton antivirus 2006 is the best solution for computer that didn't have any internet connection. it is because we can download the virus difination from other cyber cafe and just install or upgread the security later. so for recommendation, using norton antivirus 2006 is the best antivirus.
I dont know McAfee 2006 - but
Sorry I dont like bad tolk - but the last 4 month I have been using Norton Internet Securety 2006, but
only had trobles with that.
The machine stops working, I get Trojan things, and when you need help, the answer are '' if you want help
to a problem ( made by Norton ) you have to pay DKR 260 for half an hour --- fantastic.
Now I have uninstalled Norton ( still 225 days left )
and insted brought BullGuard 2 years licence for the same price as Norton - and BullGuard have fixed all
the problems that Norton left in my computer costs
DKR o,oo

The Reason I say no to Norton and McAfee is Very Simple. Any one can Buy it at Wal Mart. So Hackers and Trojon Writers are already ahead of the game when you go buy it off the Shelf. Look What Happened To Norton's 2004 antivirus utility.
I use Panda Platiumn with Tru Prevent 2005 Edition. I get a news letter every week, or when ever there is a New virus that is a Serious threat. Also it updates every day, and it also installs new virus codes when ever Panda issue's them, Some times 3 times a day.
When I used Norton, and A virus invaded my PC { avg of once a week } Norton would Charge $35 for a tool to remove it. With Panda you just go to their Web Site and download it for free. I live in Idaho. The State Gov. and 80% of the Banks here use it.
So if You Want a Good Anti Virus and Firewall, Try it out
Also, You Have to Download The Software From Their Web Site. And Make Your Own Disk.
I Have never Had Any Thing or any one Hack into My Computers, or Had a Virus or Trojon infect my Hard Drives
It was Horrible Period with Norton System Works 2006 i had installed it 3 months on my emachines my present (disposable compu)lol. But it made my computer not only slower,it also wasn't program freindly, men know one told me it was going to put me into the wringer!?!? jippers, all i hear from people say 'oh its a good program try it out you will see, hummm,so i did like a jerk handed it *$80.00 smackeroos when happy to my home to install this would be top notch killer and i realise after the first registry fix from my preinstall windows XP service pack 2 that there was a total of:182 invalid active x com invalid path, and so on and so the list was 4-ever...Now that being said i try to be cool and i said is this a true result because i never had installed anything alse all i did was uninstall Norton Internet Security 2005 because here in this forum people were indicating that this version of Norton was having problems well i took my chances and purchsed NSW 2006 after uninstalling other preinstalled program nothing but tons of crap including sorry McAfee i know you will hate me for that,i then decided to uninstall NSW which only had something like 90+ days on my system and it didnt do me any good it alwsys was monitoring 3 signatures like if i was a fool or a dummy, humm,i then installed Panda Antivirus 2005 comes everyday with new automatic up dates tara* and it comes with it a decent firewall, and scans in the background so far so good and it didenfects any stupid attempts to put a spyware cookie.Cant complaine.
So Far No One That Has Responded To This Forum {What is Better} Has Come Up with Any thing Better.
The Software That Has Been Offered For Use is readlly available To all thatWish To try them out.
But I'm the Type Of Person That Wants To Rule My Computer, and not it ruling Me. So The Less Spy Ware / Firewalls / Anti Virus / And Any thing Else You Can Think of To Put On Your HDD Will In The Long Run End Up Failing You, Just When You need it the Most.
That is why I Will Only Use Panda, { Yes It Can Be A SOB To set Up, But Once it is And You Have All Of the Window Updates, And Have Either MS Defender or Microsoft AntiSpyware Beta 1, Then You Will Have A Computer That is Well Protected And Not Be Eaten alive by CPU usage or Space. When I first started Using Panda it was only a 9mb file to download. But Now it is over 30 Megs due To All the New Virus Codes. So The War Goes On.
I figured When I responded to this Forum That I Would Start Getting Junk Emails And Other Stuff. Well I was Right, And Here is A Header Of On Of These Emails:

I am a home computer technician. Nothing but problems with Norton, I believed in it for years. When a virus gets through there is no support. And why does it get through in the first place? AVG is trouble free, uses less resources. I also use Zone Alarm firewall.
I used to use Norton Antivirus, until I caught a virus & found I was unable to access the Norton website "because my pc is infected".
Cheers Norton, what do I do now! my only option was to pay for another programme & so I chose Mcafee, which fixed the problem for me.
As a consultant I have had the time and client demand to look at this very carefully. I have tested at least a dozen different a/v and combo suites and found that both Norton and McAfee in their pursuit of being everthing to everyone has lost sight of the prize.
Once I completely removed Nortons from my system(including App files, registry and all) I notice a 25- 27% performance increase. Once rebooted and defraged, the system performed to it's original design specs. I presently have AVG in place and have yet to have any trouble. Since that panned out, I began prescribing this process to clients who to date, love it.
The key is too completely remove all previous versions of the out going software.
Hope this helps
I'm currently trying my 12th AV in this year (Antivir) &
i'm glad to read messages like yours : i completely agree . I'm sure you've already tried Eset's Av ; if not
i'd suggest to try it : is lightweight , efficient , has
well updated database & does not disrupt any other
process .
Best Regards
White [ITA]
Thanks white lightning
I will add it to my list to test and see.

For someone who isn't all that great with computers, please explain the process to completly remove old protection. Also, with Earthlink you have on-line protection from Norton, I had problems when I had McAfee protection before switching to Norton AV. Norton seems to slow my computer, I removed Systems Works completely to improve things.
Usually all you have to do is go Start->Add/Remove Programs and uninstall the security software, then install the new software. If the uninstall fails for some reason (Norton has received enough complaints in this field), then there's usually a secondary uninstaller or instructions on removing the software manually (depends on the version). This goes for programs in general, not just security software.
Hope this helps,
John
As I stated in an earlier msg. go to Symantec and download a little program they have, to purge norton from your system...lp
I have used both and like Norton somewhat better. Major thing is that you have to uninstall the Norton software before you upgrade or you will need Geek Squad...ha ha. Motoracer
First i have tried both norton and mcafee, neither of them meet my expectations, they are both:
Expensive
Large memory usage
slow startup
awkward and bulky
annoying (yes they annoy me)
and in the end, not as good as they claim.
I have one of the cleanest and most problem free windows machines of everyone i know, and i have never paid for any security or utility program.
For anti-virus I use AVG free. It automatically updates, is free, very easy to use (user friendly), allows for more advanced options, is a small program, and uses very little system resources, even when scanning.
In addition to take up the slack where AVG drops off i use ZoneAlarm free firewall, Adaware SE Personal, spybot S&D, Windows Defender, and CCleaner. All of these programs are small, fast, free, and use little or no system resources.
I scanned one computer with norton's spyware program, and then immediately scanned it with adaware, adaware found 90+ entries that norton missed, 9 of which were serious.
So my opinion is there is no reason to pay for any security/utility software, try the programs i listed. They are all easy uninstalls (unlike norton and mcafee) so even if you don't like them you haven't lost anything!

I have Earthlink and it comes with on-line protection, will that conflict with these programs?
If you have Comcast for your ISP you already have access to the full McAfee security suite 'for free'. It may not be the best at anything but it seems to get decent reviews.
I was a diehard Norton user from way back in the mid '90s, but in recent years Norton slowed my system way down and caused erratic behavior with other applications. So, when I got my new PC last August I left Norton behind . . .
