General discussion

Norton Anti Virus, Automatic Updates & Redundant Files.

May 9, 2006 12:52AM PDT

I am not sure whether this is the correct category for this subject, if not please let me know.

I have just upgraded fron NAV 2002 to NAV 2006. Initially I didn't think I was receiving automatic updates but I have just discovered that the the definition update alert window in the bottom right hand corner of the screen appears briefly UNDERNEATH any open window or web page. That means that I don't actually see it. Is this how the programme is supposed to work? It would be better if the alert appeared on top of all open windows.

Before upgrading I removed NAV 2002 using Add/Remove programs but I see that there is still a file in the programs folder called "Norton Anto Virus Set Up". If I try to run this from Start/All Programs it tells me that I have a more up to date version of NAV. I assume therefore that it would be in order to remove the NAV Set Up folder. Is that correct please?

Any help would be appreciated. I have XP SP2.

and I think it's poor programming. First time I noticed it was when I went to shut down and there was the notice. since that feature uses quite a bit of resources; I disabled it and do a daily manual update using windows task scheduler. don't disable auto-protect.

also thank you tomron for cornell site

Scheduled Tasks? If so, when using the wizard do you know which file in Norton sets up the update because when I tried this a few days ago the status column said "Could not start" and I assumed I had picked the wrong file.

The problem is that I do not want to remove the whole programme and wonder if it is safe to remove NAV Set Up that seems to relate to NAV 2002.

Thank you Woods-Hick and Tomron for your help. I am afraid that I am not much of a techi and Symantec support isn't that good.

yes go back to WinTS

I have NorIntSecurity so it my be a little different. Use the wizard and browse to find Live Update. Make this the program to run in WTS. choose a task name and any time. don't create a password. you might get the "can't start because you aren't administrator or something". ignore that. finish. then right click Live Update>properties>check box 'run only if logged on'.

test, 'run' regardless of your scheduled time; you can always go back to properties and fine tune it. let us know what happens.

Which file in the folder do I use to run Live Update. This is the problem I had before when the Status kept reporting "Could not start".

Thanks for your help.

some other thoughts

when I browse in the WTS wizard 'Live Update' is a stand alone component, which I can choose. Remember I have Norton SysWorks. You only have NAV2006, correct? Maybe 'LU' is integrated and not a separate component. I also use a small utility called 'startup monitor' which alerts me when ANY program wants to start (eg 'auto live update'). A notice appears on TOP of all others asking to allow this action. Just click: yes or no. Here is the link: http://www.mlin.net/

Another handy utility there is 'startup control panel'. They are freeware and use little resources. You could ask your question in the V&S forum where more users might have only NAV2006. Keep us updated with your quest.
