Norton Anti-Virus 2003

Nov 26, 2003 9:34PM PST

I have used stand alone Norton Anti-Virus for 4 years now. I have had no problems that I know of, but I have heard that the way Norton operates slows down a PC. Is this true? I am planning to switch to AVG when my subscription runs out, but if it will spped up my machine, I will change sooner. BTW, I run Bob's suite regularly, check for/download updates as they become available, and have never had a parastie or virus.

Same here. No problem in using NAV 2003 that is bundled with System Works.

but I have heard that the way Norton operates slows down a PC. Is this true?

Some are reporting slow down, some don't. I think it depends on the systems' RAM or Processor or how many 3rd party programs are running during or after Windows start-up. If there's low RAM (less than 64MB - maybe slow down will happen but if the user is using 128MB, 256MB, 512MB etc of RAM - should be OK). I've used different versions of Norton (versions 2001, 2002, 2003 & 2004) - none of them caused slow down the system. Again, it depends on what are the running applications or services and specifications of the system.

AVG is faster to load than Norton. Tried it in the same system. AVG does not use too much resources.

BTW, I run Bob's suite regularly, check for/download updates as they become available, and have never had a parastie or virus.

Cool! - It's nice to hear that you don't have parasites or virus {{thumbs up}}

The Activation woes for Norton 2004.
Nov 26, 2003 11:05PM PST

Reading:
http://www.pcworld.co.nz/news.nsf/0/E2FCDF3EDB907A34CC256DD400636799?OpenDocument

"A glitch in this feature is causing some users of Norton Antivirus 2004, Norton Internet Security 2004, Norton Antispam 2004 and Norton SystemWorks 2004 to be asked for a product activation code every time their PCs are rebooted."

Why you would stick it out with Symantec when free alternatives are out there.

This does not appear to be a good year for Symantec.

Bob, I'm not getting 2004. I have had no problems to date with 2003, so I was going to get my money's worth out of it before I switch, If it might be causing slowdown, I would switch now.

Alan, my sentiments exactly...

As long as I am receiving updates using NAV 2003 then why switch. Wink My experience with this software has been nothing but good... and receive updates almost daily and some times twice daily. What else would I want?
