Norton 2005 install from Cd...takes 2 hours?

Jan 4, 2005 10:29AM PST

Help.........
I started to install NAV 2005 from CD. After 2 hours, I aborted the install. I removed the CD and closed the program.

I used End It All to close all running programs. I went to the Symantec site for the 24 hour "Support" and that is a joke. I type in a question...certain words are 'picked' from the sentence and an automated response is displayed. I have to check a statement that the automan presumes will help answer my question...Sheesh.

I knew if I came here, someone could help me. I am so frustrated!!!!

I have used NAV for 5 years, and never has it taken this long to install. Is there something new on 2005 that would prolong the install? Is there something else I have to do that wasn't required on previous NAV versions?

I hope someone can help me.
Thanks,
Sheila

Try this...

You need to remove *all* of the old Norton in order to do an install of later Norton products. I found it to be a PITA to do, or that it requires some manaul removal. If you fail, then re-install NAV2004, then use add/remove process icon or Norton's own uninstall feature. Yeah, troublesome is a kind word for it. Here's a link that may help:

http://service1.symantec.com/SUPPORT/tsgeninfo.nsf/docid/2004020314035036?Open&src=&docid=2001092114452606&nsf=nav.nsf&view=docid&dtype=&prod=&ver=&osv=&osv_lvl=

-OR- use google and with keywords: remove NAV2004

Once done and it seems OK, then reboot w/o any Norton NAV2004 present, then proceed to install NAV2005. You may want to close any apps not needed to give better system resources for the task. However, if ram is 64mb, then believe me hellva alot more because that's wimpy for win98, 128mb is better but anything above that is a real plus. Thus, having only 64mb available it should be slow anyways, NAV alone is a resource hog.

good luck Happy -----Willy

I wanted to get back to you about your response.I think the problem I had yesterday, trying to install NAV 2005 and I aborted after 2 hours, was that NAV 2005 removes 2004 automatically, and then installs 2005. I stopped the process too early.

I tried it again today, very early this morning, and it took me HOURS to complete. Well, I was doing laundry also!

I deleted cookies,*.gid,*.avi,and %temp% files. I tried to install NAV 2005 and nothing would happen. I searched for more answers and tried different things. I tried again to install 2005, and nothing. Soooooo..I reinstalled NAV 2004...no problem doing that. I then tried again with NAV 2005......Bingo....everything went smoothly.

All the information for installation was installed yesterday, and when I aborted the process, I must have been in Limbo. I have scanned my files 3 times and no virus.

Everything is working fine so far.

Thank you for responding.

Now,I know I should get rid of some of the programs that run at startup, but truthfully I am a little scared of doing that. I guess I just don't know which ones I should get rid of.

From what I have read on this forum, I know my computer will be faster. My computer memory varies from 65% to 88%.

Thanks again,
Sheila

cookies

Is it OK to delete all cookies? What are *gid and *avi files? In trying to make my computer run faster I went from FAT l6 to FAT 32 (using help window. It hasn't made a noticeable difference in speed, but I can no longer back up my Quicken 98 data. Lynda

I just installed 2005
Jan 7, 2005 11:28AM PST

I just installed Norton 2005 this week. It was time to renew my virus subscription and I chose to upgrade from 2003 to 2005 because it was only $5 more to upgrade compared to renewing my subscription. I uninstalled 2003 first then put the CD in and let it do it's thing. It did take a long time but not two hours, maybe like 20 min. or a little more I would say but it was quite a long time and I just went about business and came back later and it was all installed and works perfectly fine. The only thing I found that I didn't like was a few hours later I was working on the computer and it started to do a full system scan because it had set this up weekly in scheduled tasks so I had to disable it. Would have been nice if it had asked first if I wanted it to do this.
