Non-standard paper in HP Photosmart 8250

Oct 22, 2009 3:14AM PDT

I'm trying to print on 6 x 8 stationery and cannot get the printer to do it. If I take a Word doc and adjust the margins and just leave the paper (in the print window) as 8.5 x 11, I get a "paper mismatch" error. (My old Epson printer used to just run whatever size through automatically.)

When I try to choose a different paper size from the Photosmart drop-down list, 6x8 is not even an option (though according to the manual, 6x8 is within the range of sizes the printer will accommodate--and why not? it claims to print smaller sizes). So I have to choose 5x7 as the paper size. I still get the "paper mismatch" error and it won't print.

When I use the "scale to fit" option for 5x7, it simply reduces the entire document, font size, margins, and all. (works similar to reduce/enlarge options on a copier)

Which makes this a guessing game--if I use an 8.5x11 doc in Word, I have to guess which size type (16 pt? 20 pt?) and what size margins I need to set for 6x8 paper, assuming all formatting will be reduced by 10 or 20%.

Does anyone know of a way to use custom paper sizes in 8250 w/o a lot of guesswork?

I'm missing my Epson--it did so much automatically that I have ot calculate manually with the 8250. and the 8250 is not good with different paper types and many labels cannot be used with it.

Thanks for any suggestions!
Any ideas on how to easily use custom-size paper
