Non functioning Akasa external hard drive enclosure

by johnfordconsult / January 30, 2009 7:20 PM PST

Have installed 750 Gb IDE hard drive in above but drive not identified as usb mass storage device in device manager or in my computer operating under XP Pro , SP3.
Hard drive checks out when used as internal drive on system and will back up existing 2X160 Gb hard drives in RAID 1
Akasa power lights come on when device plugged in but data light flickers initially for a while then locks permanently on. Device linked through powered 4 port usb hub and fed through from 2 ports using recommended dual to single usb 2 cable. All usb ports are operating normally in device manager with all drivers acknowledged as best.
Help would be most appreciated!

Any known 750GB 3.5 inch hard disk is 10 Watts and up.

I see a power shortage.

Bob Thanks for prompt response. However although hard drive is rated at .72 amps @5V & .52 amps at 12v akasa enclosure has its own power supply rated at 2 amps @5V & 2 amps @12V.

That dual USB cable is misleading.

We use those duals when we want to draw power from USB ports. Since this USB hard disk has it's own power I'd start simple with your good single USB 2.0 cable right to the PC.

In parting some don't know hard disks arrive blank without formatting or a drive letter and think it's defective. Tell me about what you did to prepare the drive.

-> Prepare the drive after you've placed it into the enclosure. Cloned drives may not show up.
