Non-destructive System Recovery won't rebuild Xp OS

My son's HP Media Center PC, a M270n, I think has acquired a worm or virus. Bottom line - cannot start the machine now. Have done a non-destructive system recovery of XpPro from both the hard drive and the HP CDs with identical results. It looks as if the copy steps of os files complete ok, OS looks as if its rebuilt and about to be written to the partition but this message comes up ... "Windows is unable to start because the registry could not be updated. Contact computer manufacturer." If you try to boot into any of the safe mode options get the message "The system is not fully installed. Please run setup again.? Anyone have any ideas other than going ahead with the destructive recovery option? Any/all ideas appreciated. Thanks in advance.

Do as advised: " Contact computer manufacturer." Anyway, have you tried System Recovery at Safe Mode ? Or maybe "Last Good Configuration" at the boot menu ?

You encountered the following error:

Q818171 -"An Error Has Been Encountered That Prevents Setup from Continuing" Error Message When Sysprep Mini Wizard Runs"

Your problem can be solved only by HP guys who should supply you a new restore CD (i.e. without the bug).

Good Luck,
