Question

noise from power steering pump?

Aug 19, 2017 7:20PM PDT

My corolla 2000 has been making a rumbling noise for quite a while. A local mechanic replaced its belt tensioner for me but the noise remains. Do I replace the power steering pump since the noise disappears if the steering wheel is turned to either side at idle?

Often this is just air in the system or the fluid is just gunky. The car is 17 years old and I'll guess the fluid is original. I'd try to bleed it and replace the fluid. You could even try the slow method of using a basting bulb to remove the reservoir fluid and replace it with new. You'd do that several times until the color is the same shade as the new fluid. Check you manual as some Toyotas use ATF rather than standard brake fluid.
