Question

Noise from pc

Sep 20, 2018 1:40PM PDT

When I turn on or shut off my pc I hear short beeping noises and, That's normal sounds for a computer to make but unfortunately, I have been hearing similar sounds while my system is on which is not normal at all and its pretty hard to identify where the sound is coming from because you never know when it will beep.
This is a picture of my system and specs: https://photos.app.goo.gl/qM5aZTJ6F8qtvN479

CPU
Intel Core i5 7400 @ 3.00GHz 40 °C
Kaby Lake 14nm Technology
RAM
8.00GB Single-Channel Unknown @ 1196MHz (17-17-17-39)
Motherboard
ASUSTeK COMPUTER INC. H110M-K (LGA1151) 118 °C
Graphics
BK550Y (1920x1080@60Hz)
4095MB NVIDIA GeForce GTX 1050 Ti (CardExpert Technology) 31 °C
Storage
223GB KINGSTON SA400S37240G (SATA-2 (SSD)) 36 °C
931GB Seagate ST1000DM010-2EP102 (SATA ) 36 °C

For some reason, the program I'm using (speccy) says that the motherboard temp is 118c but in bios, it is around 40c.

This program doesn't show the temperature of the motherboard

Smart values for the hdd show the unit is junk.

Replace the hdd.

HDD causing high motherboard temp?
Sep 25, 2018 8:39AM PDT

So you are saying that I need to replace the HDD because it's causing high temperatures on the motherboard?

- Collapse -
No
Sep 25, 2018 9:01AM PDT

Nothing to do with speccy and mobo temps.

The smart values for that disk show it is having many internal problems.

You don't want that hdd in your machine.

Answer
A Speccy reading. Or what I would do if mine.

1. The Seagate is indeed in failure mode. We see the usual 01 and 07 issues.
Used Space: 208 MB (0%) so you should be able to unplug it and carry on.

2. The motherboard is reporting in at 118 °C Go get some other test software and verify.
That high a temp can lead to many strange and hard to pin down issues beyond what the HDD issue.
This is almost a sure source of the motherboard beeps.

I will unplug the HDD and check again
Sep 25, 2018 8:48AM PDT

That's a shame, the HDD was pretty new and it works but if it's causing my motherboard to heat up like you say then I will not hesitate to unplug it right now.
temp in bios is still the same.

no other software shows my Asus H110M-K temp, I will keep searching.

118c
Sep 25, 2018 9:17AM PDT

I checked with hwmonitor and it also says 118c after I unplugged my HDD I think it gives me a false reading on the temperature.
a couple of weeks after I got this computer I remember that I checked temperatures for my components and it showed 118c, that doesn't make any sense...

Is these warranty issues?
Sep 25, 2018 11:06AM PDT

Check the warranties. The reports only are giving up a few items which either one is not good to see.

That 118C could cause all sorts of issues. Even if false, it's a bum board.

OR...

Forgot to add this. That board temp is usually one of the bridge chips. If the heatsink was not on right you see 100+C temps.

Discard HDD issues

I've done this.
Sep 26, 2018 9:40AM PDT

I've taken a drive with high values in 01 and 07, removed it and the PC works as it should where before it would stutter and BSOD then ran SeaTools and the drive passed.

This tool appears to have a low standard for what a good drive is.

You can also sniff out drive issues with USERBENCHMARK's test at http://www.userbenchmark.com/
The drive test portion also can give us insight to this issue.

Userbenchmark and seatools say that the HDD is healthy
Sep 30, 2018 1:52PM PDT

Userbenchmark test: "performing beyond expectations"

I have also ran tests on seatools , the HDD passed all of them...

It's just that the HDD makes these annoying noises when I restart , shutdown and while the computer is on...
The HDD is healthy and working it just makes strange noises.

I don't think I can solve this issue

Since I can't record the sound for you all ,it will be hard for you to know what I should do...
It's probably a cheap hard drive anyway and it only makes these sounds now and then so I'm not too worried about it ,but
thanks for your replies anyway.

In spite of the tests giving the HDD a pass.
Sep 30, 2018 2:12PM PDT

It's not looking good in the smart values. At the very least, backup what you can't lose.

Thanks but i won't need to beckup anything
Sep 30, 2018 2:32PM PDT

I never need to beckup anything cause I only have my games and some apps on my pc Wink
I actually used to format my HDD a lot , I think that maybe caused some damage to it .
I have two final questions:
can the HDD harm other components? , Is it not recommended to keep this HDD on the system ? (It's currently unplugged from all cables and I only use the SSD right now)

In decades
Sep 30, 2018 2:37PM PDT

The only time we ever saw a HDD damage a system was when in 1990 one of the old HP1000 disk platters got loose. These are huge drives and platters and it basically trashed the entire drive turning it in a salvage item. Something you would scavenge parts from. This is the only case I know of where damage extended beyond the drive.

Given you don't see these in the wild or PCs my answer is nope. Would not worry about it.

Interesting
Sep 30, 2018 2:43PM PDT

That's interesting I guess I have nothing to worry about...
since I don't care if my data gets destroyed and I only use it for games that have cloud saving.
Thank you

If the hdd is unplugged you can leave it mounted in the machine.

Does the machine still beep with the hdd unplugged?

It does not make sounds when HDD is unplugged
Sep 30, 2018 3:39PM PDT

No it does not

Just guessing
Sep 30, 2018 4:02PM PDT

That this sound is the same sort of beep sound you hear when the machine goes through post.

Test for a couple of days with the hdd unplugged if no beep connect the hdd and see if the beep comes back.

Almost there
Sep 30, 2018 4:14PM PDT

I unplugged the HDD yesterday and so far I have not heard the sound when I shut down ,restart and use the pc , I will plug it in tomorrow but I am almost sure that it will make sounds again
