Noise from my UPS

May 14, 2007 12:24AM PDT

I bought an APC UPS 2 months ago. It was working ok except today. After a power failure, I shut down Windows and then the UPS. I didn't shut down the line through which main power was coming to the UPS. When main power was back, I turned the UPS on. It was noising like it didn't get power from the main line. I checked the line and it was ok. Then I turned the UPS off. Still it was noising. Then I unplugged it from the main power source and removed from my PC. I smelled something is burnt. The UPS is always noising, it doesn't matter whether I turned it on or off. It happened 1 hour ago. There is a circuit breaker switch and an instruction: "Press to reset." But the switch cannot be pressed.

What happened to the UPS? How can I stop the noise it makes?

Sounds bad. Call it in and get them to replace it.

Since this UPS is only 2mos. old, then by all means use the warranty, don't crack it open. It certainly sounds after a power hit/surge(failure) it did its job. Isn't replacing the UPS better than any system components. You smell something "burnt", well let the manufacturer deal with it, or simply buy another one. It maybe less costly if s/h on your end is too much(that's your expense). You may want to upgrade the UPS to a higher end one, if you experience this sort of thing often.
