No wireless connections??

Jan 28, 2006 6:09AM PST

Hi I have recently bought a medion laptop that has wireless capability with prism 802.11g adapter. I bought a belkin adsl modem and router to connect up.

After following the belkin setup my laptop can not pick up any wireless connections but connects ok when connected with the ethernet lead.

I took the belkin back to pc world and they supplied another one along with a usb adapter. Now the usb adapter can pick up a wireless conections from my router and someone elses secured network but I do not really want to use this (as it protrudes out the side of laptop). I noticed I have no card in the side of the laptop, should I have one (the box said it had wireless adapter.

Antone who could help, much appreciated.. Thanks

internal mini-PCI card?
Jan 28, 2006 6:23AM PST

Laptop model number?
Router model number?

Many new laptops/notebooks have an internal wireless-g network adapter. It is inside the notebook case (you can't see it unless you open the case).

Disconnect all external wireless network adapters.

In Windows XP, click:
Start > Connect to > Show all Connections.

In the window that opens, click:
View > Details.

What "Device Names" are listed (exclude all "1394" connections)?

WiFi or Router issue
Jan 28, 2006 7:02AM PST

I have a similar problem. My laptop was responding to the router I have on the desktop with the cable Internet. Now it shows a connection, but I cannot get on the web. I am not sure if it is the WiFi card or the router.

Built in wireless LAN 802.g
Jan 28, 2006 9:24PM PST

Hi thank for the reply. That specs of laptop say it has a built in wirless LAN 802.11g (54mbit/s. In device manager it shows the hardware as being a "Prism 802.11g"

Laptop is: Medion MD95278
Router/Modem is: Belkin FD7632uk4 (ADSL Modem with built in Wireless Router)

I have not got my laptop with me at the moment but I do know in connections it has an icon under LAN section that says wireless connection (when I go into this connection it says it is not connected to anything).

When I get back to laptop I will post the other connections in the network connections.

Thanks

some steps

If the laptop description says it has ''built in wireless,'' that tells me that it does indeed have an internal wireless card (likely a mini-PCI card).

An extra confirmation of this is that you did indeed see a wireless connection icon in your Network Connections window.

I would try to get the internal wireless-g network adapter to work with whatever wireless-g router you have.

1. Make a WIRED connection from your laptop to the router to configure the router.

2. Go to the router mfg's website to download the latest version of the router's FIRMWARE. Read the router's manual to find how to update/upgrad the firmware. You need to do this with a WIRED connection (not too difficult).

3. Download and install the latest wireless network adapter driver from your computer mfg or wireless network adapter website.

4. After updating the router firmware and adapter driver, remove the network cable between the router and laptop, and follow the router instructions to make a wireless connection without any encryption (WEP or WPA) and without MAC filtering.

4. If this is unsuccessful, try connecting with your laptop firewall turned off. This could be Windows XP's built-in firewall or a separate firewall program like Norton Internet Security, McAfee, ZoneAlarm, et al.

Thanks for advice

Thanks I will give that a try as soon as I can find an updated driver for the adapter. I was looking for one but was having difficulty. Its a prism 802.11g if anyone knows where I can find a driver.

I had looked on the belkin website for an updated firmware but it seemed that the version on their site was lower than the one on the laptop.

I will give the rest a try with the current driver and firmware and let you know if it works. I am sure I already tried to set it up without any security but I will try again. Many thanks
