Question

No VGA output with new Windows 7 install

Dec 28, 2013 5:50PM PST

I purchased a Toshiba Satelite C855D running Windows 8. It ran fine considering what it is and it connected to my big screen LCD tv via VGA just fine as well.

For a number of reasons, I installed Windows 7 on the laptop and now I can't get any output on the VGA. The tv does seem to register that something is happening with the VGA when its connected (ie the Connect a signal note is not on the screen) but there's no actual images or response from the laptop.

I've tried to access/install any drivers and the system currently reads a Generic PnP Monitor Driver to no avail. Done the Resetting/Identify/Detecting and haven't gotten any help. I imagine it's something simple I'm missing.

Does anyone have any idea what the issue/fix could be?

Video drivers

I will let the experts here say more but I'm guessing you do need video/graphic card drivers for Windows 7.

Using the Device Manage to search the Microsoft database for the correct drivers is likely to fail because, frankly, Microsoft does not do drivers and that option has never worked that well.

So get the Windows 7 drivers for that specific computer model and that video card direct from the computer maker's web site, or direct from the video card manufacturer's web site.

All this assumes that this Windows 8 system is able to downgrade successfully. Not all do.

Good luck.

If Toshiba doesn't have the right drivers (a set of Windows 7 drivers for your model) I'd go back to factory settings, install Classic Shell to make Windows 8 look like Windows 7 and learn to live with it.

If you really need a Windows 7 laptop (but that's a rare occurrence) why didn;t you buy one that came with it in stead of spending 150 USD or so for a retail version?

Small world.

At the office we have the nearby model S855D and installing Windows 7 would be pretty hard. Only Toshiba may have the procedure.

But it came with Windows 8 and we installed Classic Shell and carry on just fine. Did you try Classic Shell?

Answer
for VGA problems

There may be VGA software not added in Win 7 for your device, if your device worked well with Win 8, then you must use VGA driver software from Win8 CD. Because maybe your device is latest than Win7. I think this is the most possible problem. I faced this kind of problem with my Laptop camera, so i installed a software from Win8 CD, for my camera.
