Question

no sound when recording

May 3, 2015 2:23PM PDT

My Info: Samsung 22" LED TV - #UN22F500AF
TiVo Series 2
Cisco Explorer 4642HDC Time Warner Digital Box

I have been going batty for the past 3 weeks, trying to figure out why my recorded shows record without sound. I've tried several ways to connect the three devises - with audio & video wire, Coaxial cables - all together or separate. Nothing worked. Today, after removing the A&V cables and having them connected with only the Coaxials (which didn't work. Picture is great - sound while I'm watching but recording w/o sound)

A theory came to mind that I thought was ridiculous but I tested it out anyway. With each recording the TV has been OFF. Why would that matter, I thought, but I tested it out. Taped 3 programs. Had the TV on for the first 2 - turned it off for the 2nd. And guess what???? No sound when the TV was off but sound when it was on. WTH?!?!?! Tested this theory twice and both times, same outcome.

Anyone have any ideas why and how to fix this? I shouldn't have to leave the TV on 24/7 to be able to record the shows I want.

Also, with the programs that did record with sound. When I transfer them to another room - the sound quality isn't great and I'm not able to turn it up any higher. I thought I solved the issue by having the TV volume all the way up and plugging in my computer speakers and turning them up and down in my room that way. The sound quality was better, but still not high enough for my hard of hearing father and am not able to turn it up. No way of turning the cable box volume up. Used to be able to do that but they're not made that way anymore. (so the Time Warner Cable tech told me)

It's all a mystery to me - would love some input and help on this.

Thank you.

I apologize for the inconvenience. The television shouldn't cause the sound to actually not record. That would actually be up to the incoming signal and the DVR provider. I would recommend trying a different cable box to see if it continues.

could it be the HDMI Cables?

My brother thought maybe it's to do with the HDMI Cables. I didn't realize there were different kinds. Maybe I purchased the wrong ones. What should I look out for for this TV?

It's a possibility. Have you tried using a 2.0 version HDMI Cable?

I purchased THESE via Amazon. If these aren't good, can you recommend which ones are?

I went with AmazonBasics.

Ok, purchased the 1st one listed. Cross your fingers. I'll let you know Saturday if it solved the mystery. (please!)

No luck - mystery still going.

I received the cables and tried it out - even restarted both boxes and still records without sound when the TV is off. (records ok with TV on)

I took pictures of the back of each box - but I see there is no pic options on this forum.

Right now, I have turned the TV on to record Grimm - have the speakers turned down and a towel over the TV so I don't watch it, as I'll be watching it with my folks later. So ridiculous!

Any more ideas to try?

For me that landed at the FLICKR site.

It was unlikely it was the cable. One last thought. Disable Samsung's CEC and don't use any ARC or such port.

Where is this?

I've looked through the TV's setting and can't find this (or Anynet+, which is what Samsung calls it (according to Google) And what is ARC?

A clue??????

Ok, experimenting after someone's suggestion ( removing the HD cable all together and recording w/o it) w/o cable there was sound while TV was off - but not in HD, obviously. Plugged it back in while still recording the ssame program and went back to no sound.... but...... a very quick message popped up. Could this be a clue???????

Bingo.

It's a HDCP bug. Since it's not up to Samsung on this round, take it up with the DVR maker/supplier.
