Regarding my Samsung series 5, 5200 model, 50 inch Smart TV. I copied the post from another member(pasted) and have a solution below it:
GET SOUND FROM SAMSUNG SMART TV HUB (NETFLIX ETC) HOME THEATER

This worked for me, YOU MUST USE AN OPTICAL AUDIO CABLE connect it to the TV and to the Home theater. Also have an hdmi cable from TV to HMTheatre. Once you select the "optical " as the source from the HMT (versus AUX) it WILL produce sound. If it does not then check your settings in the TV such as source (hdmi 1, TV, hdmi 2 etc) as well as audio settings (external speakers versus TV ) I did not actually have to change anything by the way just left it on normal settings HDMI 1 from cable box for example.
EddieZT here: I have found that if you have an optical output cable and don't have a newer sound system with 5.1(like mine) you won't get sound. What I have is an optical audio cable going from the TV into an optical - analog converter box( +- $ 20 Canadian, shipped from e-bay). Samsung tech support said that it wasn't possible to get the sound unless I had 5.1(this only applies for the apps like Netflix etc.). After several tries in the sound parameters, I found in the sound settings DCS format, chose it and voila, SURROUND SOUND from my stereo. You must not have TV speakers activated, but rather TV sound audio out. Give this a try, it worked for me. I guess Samsung probably would love you to buy their name brand sound systems to go along with their TV's, since they don't even know there is a simple solution as I have found. By the way, the sound from all my other devices(satellite, DVD and Nintendo) still work fine, along with the new solution for the apps like Netflix. Hope this can help some of you out there, as I am not a tech expert whatsoever. Cheers, Ed
