no sound on Dimension 4500

by abused4500 / January 20, 2006 8:33 AM PST

I am working with a Dell Dimension 4500 desktop with Windows XP Home SP2, 256 ram, Pentium 4 1.8, 40 GB & 120 GB HDs, DVD-ROM and CD-RW, fire-wire. Over the past few months the sound has be coming and going. It has on-board sound (SoundMax) and if it was uninstalled through Device Manager and re-installed through Add New Hardware it generally would start working. Now even that does not work. Device Manager says it is there and working properly but Sounds and Audio Devices in Control Panel says there is no audio device. Disabled on-board sound, uninstalled software and installed new sound card and software with same outcome. Also installed new hard drive and restored PC using original disks. Sound worked, thus ruling out hardware failure. Obviously there is some kind of software conflict in the original configuration, but I do not know where to look. There is over two years of programs and data on the two drives so I am reluctant start over if there is someway to isolate the software conflict. Any suggestions would be appreciated. Right now I am just living without sound.

Help, my PC with Windows 10 won't shut down properly

Since upgrading to Windows 10 my computer won't shut down properly. I use the menu button shutdown and the screen goes blank, but the system does not fully shut down. The only way to get it to shut down is to hold the physical power button down till it shuts down. Any suggestions?
