NO SOUND!! (Intel 82801AA I/O Controller Hub - AC'97 Audio Adapter)

Jan 25, 2004 8:42AM PST

Windows 98 SE
MotherBoard - ASUS CUSL-LV

I have installed several different drivers one after another without any luck in order to get my PC's sound working. The closest I've come to fixing this problem is installing the AC'97 Audio Adapter and everything seeming right yet the sound still refuzes to work. I've heard of several different people who have had this exact problem while surfing the web, involving the Intel 82801AA, though no solutions...to my knowledge at least. Suggestions I'm getting from the web, that I believe might be the solution to solving this problem, is to Update the motherboard's drivers/devices or something with the ?BIOS? I am stumped with this one and any help would be greatly appreciated. If I missed information that is needed to help, just let me know. Thanks for any help with this, hope to hear suggestions soon!

If the onboard sound system is defective, the choices are:

1. Return the board to the supplier as defective.
2. Disable it and find some PCI Audio card. I use the Creative Labs or Turtle Beach units if I want stellar sound and simple 10 buck cards if I just need sound...
Do NOT pick out any Aureal based cards since they've been dead for far too long (no current drivers.)

So pretty much your saying this card is defective. Alright as that might be a possibly I was wondering if the sound card wasn't defective if there is or could there be a solution to this problem? Any ideas? Please help if possible thanks.

Can you boot a KNOPPIX CD?

If you really really really want a second opinion if the onboard sound is dead or alive, go get a KNOPPIX CD and see if it will play some MP3 off your hard disk.

Here's an article about this:

This is MY SECRET WEAPON to test hardware.

Remember we are talking a 10 dollar sound card to fix this if the onboard sound just won't working with Windows. If it works in KNOPPIX, that's a good sign, but imagine that many can't find or install Windows drivers for their motherboards. Your first post detailed some chip, but missed the big clue.

Yes I know it's very cheap to replace a sound card just ment for playing your every day media. But before I'd purchase a replacment I'd like to be positive that I'm installing these device drivers correctly. The system is running Windows 98 SE and I don't have the OS install disk. Now I still get the device drivers installed yet Windows itself doesn't appear to be detecting them at all. When I attempt to install anything it typically asks for the install disk so I just try to get around these message boxes and get the drivers installed without using the disk. I was just wondering if this could be the problem and if so is there any way to get around using the Windows 98 SE install disk message boxes or no? Sorry about the rambling on about what seems like nothing. Thanks for the help!

If you have the AC97 (or Avance Integrated Sound Card on your system), you need to get the drivers for that particular hardware. It has since been purchased by the Real Tek company, and appropriately renamed Real Tek 97. Try using your search engine in your browser and it will provide the site to gain the correct driver.
