No sound help?

Dec 2, 2004 6:32AM PST

I have Compaq Presario 5451 . I downloaded drivers after a restore but still no sound? What is wrong? Is soundcard bad? I think it is onboard the motherboard.
Windows 98SE. This computer is a headache.

Trains,

What do you mean by "no sound". Nothing at all? Do you get the Windows sounds out of your speakers? Can you play a CD through your CD-rom? If nothing, then....

Have you checked the speaker wires to make sure they're connected correctly?

Which drivers did you download? From the Compaq site? What is the sound card information such as "Provider/manufacturer, driver version, and driver date? (RIGHT click on "MY Computer", choose "Properties". When that loads, click on the "Device Manager" tab. when that loads, click onthe + sign next to "Sound, video, and Game Controllers". Click once on the specific sound card device, then click on the "Properties" button, then click on the "Driver" tab.)

Try this: Restart the computer in "Safe Mode". Then RIGHT click on "MY Computer", choose "Properties". When that loads, click on the "Device Manager" tab. when that loads, click onthe + sign next to "Sound, video, and Game Controllers". RIGHT click on and Delete the device on your computer. If there are multiple listings for the same device, delete them all. Now restart the computer into "normal" Windows. When it restarts, Windows should recognize the "new" hardware and reinstall the appropriate drivers for the device.

Hope this helps.

Grif

When you look in the device manager, is there anything with a yellow question mark next to it?

I recently restored an older computer running Windows 98. I had to manually reinstalled not only the operating system but all of the drivers for the hardware and controllers as well. There is a process you must follow for everything to go right. You wrote that you think the sound is on the motherboard. You really need to know what type of sound you have. Is it integrated on the motherboard or a separate card? You can't just guess and hope it works.

I'd suggest you go to the Compaq web site and find the support page for your model. You should be able to find all of the specs for your computer listed there. You should also be able to download drivers for your model. After you find out more information and get the right drivers for your computer, post back and someone should be able to help you through this.
