it is very strange that i do not have any sound from my line-in. i want to record from the tape to my G5. plugget tape recorder to mini-jack line-in and i can see line-in indicator moving acording to the input signal but i can not figure out how to monitor that sound from my tape. i tryed to record it and it is recorded good but still i cant hear the sound from tape.

is there any chance to monitor sound from line-in?

Usually the sound is

monitored using the software that you are recording with.
CD Spin Doctor, for instance, is a program for transferring tape and vinyl to your machine and on to CD.
Unless you tell the program, in the preferences, that you want to monitor the input, it is silent. On this program is is called "play through"

What software are you using to capture the audio from your tape player?

PS -> i am new to Mac and i have a lot of questions. For example how to share my whole external hard disk or just one folder on it to all the windows users on our network? i can not figure out. On windows it so easy to control network sharing.

Under System Preferences -> Internet & Network -> Sharing -> Services.

Enable Personal File Sharing. That should do it, but if you want more in-depth access from another machine you might need to get Apple Remote Desktop.

no sound - no third party program!

I have the same problem: I get no sound from my line-in.
I can hear the sound from my walkman directly connected to headphones - so the walkman is working. I have the System Preferences set to "Audio Line-in". I can see the line-in indicator moving. Why is there no output from the system speakers?

Shouldn't I be able to just play my tape recorder through my eMac?

I have the same problem on my 2.5 gig iMac G5, OS X 10.4.8. I have my stereo line out pluged into the line in jack, I can see a very high level in the sound panel with the input volume almost all the way down, but no sound at all from the internal speakers. I cannot recored into Spin Doctor, but can get some distorted sounds into Amadeus II. Anyone know how to fix this?

One hesitates to ask, but

you do have the Sound control panel configured correctly?

Under the input Tab, check that Microphone/Line in is not muted. Adjust the input volume there

Yes, I've tried adjusting the line-in level and no, the mute button is not checked. Still no sound.

Although the same 1/8" line-in pin plug works fine on the line-out side to my hi-fi, I am wondering if there is some mechanical problem with Apple's type of line-in jack-is it ono-standard perhaps on the 20" iMac? With it pushed all the way in, I can still see about 1/8" or so of the shaft.
