No sound card blues (they refuse to run without one)

Nov 10, 2005 6:55PM PST

Ok, its bad enough I don't have a working sound card nor ready to buy a new one yet, does windows media player have to rub it in my nose by refusing to play anything with sound?!

I tried disabling sound in every way. But the buggers obstinate and refuses to play. Real player gives me grief too.

"There is no sound card
You either do not have a sound card installed on your computer or it is not functioning properly. If you do not have a sound card installed, you must install one before you can listen to audio in a digital media file. If you do have a sound card installed, refer to its documentation to troubleshoot the problem.

Error ID = 0x80040256, Remedy ID = 0x00000000"

Media players aren't the only ones to bulk at a lack of sound card. But for now I'd settle on a way to get past this issue and play my medias video. Anyone know a player that will do it or a way I can tweak or trick windows media player or real player to play without sound?

When they finally installed the motherboard drivers, the sound finally and magically was detected and began to work.

In your case, this discussion is dieing with no life support (so few details.)

I have no sound card
Nov 14, 2005 12:09PM PST

Its not a matter of not detecting a sound card, its a matter of not having one. (no onboard card either) I feel sure I made that clear in the first post.

Real player refuses to play if you don't have a sound card.

I was wondering what players will play irregardless of sound card. I know of one, VLC media. But that program doesn't work with CC. I would like to know what others there are.

I was also wondering if someone knew of some kind of dumby driver or XP trick to convince programs of the existence of a sound card even when there isn't one.

What other possible details do you need provide help?

Why not get a sound card?

Ask around. I now have 4 I'm on the verge of tossing out.

The old SPEAKER DRIVER trick we did back in Windows 3.1 days doesn't work in NT/2000 or XP.

So that's a deadend.

In closing, when most write they don't have a sound card in these forums, they mean their machine can't detect the hardware. Sorry, but after some thousand posts like that you're the first to truly not have the card.

Fixable by adding a card.

Cheers,

Bob
