No Sound

Aug 30, 2010 6:34AM PDT

I noticed yesterday that I have no sounds coming from my computer. Here are a list of things I think are important to note after reading other forums.

- Thinkpad T42
- Running XP Pro SP3
- The volume is up
- Hotkey is not the issue
- In my Programs folder I have a folder for Realtek AC97
- My device manager does not list this anymore
- Under 'Add/Remover Programs' AC97 is not listed anymore.
- No change when I used my external speakers

I cannot add a screenshot I see so here is what is listed:

DEVICE MGR
*Sound, Video, and Game Controllers
-Audio Codecs
-Legacy Audio Drivers
-Legacy Video Capture Devices
-Media Control Devices
-Microsoft Kernal DLS Synthesizer (has the yellow exclamation point)
-SoundMAX Intergrated Digital Audio (has the yellow exclamation point)
-Video Codecs

The Realtek folder is 48.5 MB and 70 files. I would be happy to furnish a screenshot of the folder if need be.

Thanks for your help.

Andrew

Find the Soundmax driver and install it.

Does it make a difference? At least the yellow exclamation point should go away.

Tried those, the Soundmax said I was missing files from Service Pack 3. It asked for the CD, but I downloaded that from Windows site long ago. Should I uninstall and reinstall SP3?

Yes, that would be the first step

in the right direction, then if the problem persists, (together) we can find the drivers you're needing.

Silly question, but when I download SP3 from Windows site, should I download to a CD for possible future use?

Good question, good idea.

Download the stand-alone installer and burn that to CD.

Ok, unistalled and reinstalled SP3, wow a lot of updates! Now Realtek shows up in my device manager, but with the yellow exclaimation point. I went to realtek's home page and dowloaded WDM_A406. When I double clicked it to start the install process it gets so far, then WHAM, BSOD. I did this twice with the same outcome. My third try I tried to update driver through device manager. I selected the Realtek Driver file, it did a system restore point, and when it started installing, I got the BSOD yet again.

Also, a side note KB981793 will not install after many many attempts.
