No sound

I can't get any sound from my Windows XP. I gave it to a friend a while ago to help fix a few things and when I got it back the sound wasn't working. He erased everything on the comp. and re-installed the windows XP program......so i dont know if that where the prob is coming from.I called him and he said that he didn't check the sound and didn't know anything about it.
My question is that, is there a sound program that I need to download or can this be fixed with a few clicks on the computer......any help would be greatly appreciated....
thank you
jen

And besides the computer, you also bundled all your manuals and software media together and gave them to him too? Describe the media you have for this Windows XP system?

You also informed this individual that if it becomes necessary to reinstall Windows for whatever reason, they should ensure everything is as it was afterwards?

My question is that, is there a sound program that I need to download or can this be fixed with a few clicks on the computer

This question depends on what you've got to do things with, want to do sound with and what peripheral you have to make sound on this system, and the necessary software to make this happen -- all which we do not know. Do you?

Do you feel qualified?

Hello Jen: First, when you format your harddrive, you erase all data and software that is loaded onto it.

Your sound card or onboard sound device, whichever you happen to have, has to have driver software installed in order for it to work. Windows does not necessarily install these files automatically. You have to do it.

If you have disks that came with your computer, (restore disks), there are most likely driver files on the disks. Look for audio drivers or such. If not, you will have to determine the make, model #, etc. of your sound card or onboard chipset.

Then go to the Mfg. website and download and install the latest driver software for that hardware.

The same can be true for your modem, video card, and any other periferrals, ie printers, scanners, etc.

An easy way to determine what hardware is installed on your machine is to Google search for Aida32 or Belarc. Either of these programs will tell you what you will need to know. They are freeware and easy to use.
Hope this helps.
